autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><figcaption><strong>Les Howie from the English FA discussing who was involved in the consultation for the decision<\/strong><br \/>Credit: English FA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>HEADING balls by under-11\u00a0footballers\u00a0in Wales is under review after England, Scotland and Northern Ireland implemented guidelines advising against it.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>A statement was released on February\u00a024 by each\u00a0football association\u00a0outlining\u00a0their new guidance in relation to heading by young players.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The Welsh FA said: \u201cMini-football is currently the only\u00a0recognised\u00a0form of football for children under 11 years old in Wales.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhile the game has all the features of real football, the smaller scale of the game means that the focus is on the ball to feet practices and technique.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mini-football is played with fewer people on a smaller pitch.\u00a0\u00a0It is played by\u00a0teams\u00a0of\u00a0four\u00a0at under-seven, going up\u00a0to\u00a0eight\u00a0at under-11.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Pitches&nbsp;range from 30&#215;20 to 60&#215;40&nbsp;yards.&nbsp; Professional football uses pitches&nbsp;of&nbsp;about 115&#215;74 yards.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The Welsh FA says heading is just a small part of mini-football as children have different needs from adult 11-a-side players.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Despite this, the Welsh FA says a review will be carried out but no guidance will be issued until its recommendations have been received.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The English, Irish and Scottish FA\u2019s verdict comes after the release of the FIELD Study, which the English FA partially funded.\u00a0 The results showed\u00a0that footballers in the study were 3.5 times more likely to die of dementia than the sample population.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It suggested there was a possible link between heading the ball, which can be travelling at very fast speeds, and\u00a0developing\u00a0Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy in adult life.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>CTE&nbsp;was traditionally&nbsp;associated with sports like boxing, where combatants get a lot of blows to the head.&nbsp; Nowadays, sports like football, rugby and American football are being linked to it.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>CTE affects brain functions and can lead to dementia.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The study\u00a0did\u00a0note there was\u00a0no direct link between brain injuries and heading the ball.\u00a0\u00a0Other factors could have caused injuries to the footballers in the study.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>This is why the\u00a0English\u00a0FA opted to issue guidance and not an outright ban and stressed that heading was still an important part of the adult game.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The new English guidelines state that\u00a0under-11s should not head\u00a0the ball\u00a0in training\u00a0sessions and it should be limited in other age groups.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-3-1024x554.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41232\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-3-1024x554.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41232\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Credit: English FA<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>A spokesman for the English FA said:&nbsp;\u201cIt\u2019s important to know that this is not a ban.&nbsp;
