Image credit: Peter Howlett<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>The Puma helicopters have caused excitement as they appeared in different locations in and around the city, from outside the Wales Millennium Centre to a field next to a school.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Peter Howlett, of\nButetown, photographed the helicopters from his back garden on Tuesday\nafternoon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI saw them fly\nover my house and went out to take some pictures,\u201d said Mr Howlett, who\nphotographs wildlife and landscapes as well as aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d also seen them fly over Cardiff Bay the night before and looked up what they were doing. From that, I found out that it was Exercise Dragon Hart.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-twitter aligncenter wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Operation Dragon Hart in full swing with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RAFBenson?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RAFBenson<\/a> 33 Sq Pumas XW220 K and XW232 P beating up Cardiff Bay this afternoon and getting a good view from my back garden! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/a0KcrfcPQr\">pic.twitter.com\/a0KcrfcPQr<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Peter Howlett (@CardiffOTT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CardiffOTT\/status\/1232333712005746689?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 25, 2020<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><figcaption>Images: Peter Howlett<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>The Squadron, whose headquarters are at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/RAFBenson\/\">RAF Benson<\/a> in South Oxfordshire, has been taking part in essential training in the Cardiff, Newport and Swansea areas ahead of their deployment to Afghanistan later this year.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The team\nis training alongside South Wales Police and using numerous authorised landing\nsites around Cardiff, as well as flying by day and by night to hone their\nskills in a safe environment.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Nigel Harris, from Barry, works in Cardiff and Newport, where he says an army Chinook helicopter flies over his workplace every week. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Harris saw two of the Puma helicopters land alongside Cardiff Castle on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs I was\nwalking into town towards Canton Bridge I could see one of them peel away and\nlower as it got to the castle. There was someone who was flying the helicopter\nand one military man in the back who walked off towards the back of the castle\nand spoke to a couple of people. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey jumped back in the helicopter about five minutes later and flew off. It\u2019s a novelty sight to what you usually see in Cardiff city centre at lunchtime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Harris\nadded that he had seen one of the helicopters in Barry on Tuesday, and that\nthose on social media had reported them landing in various other Cardiff\nlandmarks. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey seem\nto be dropping into a number of locations, so perhaps they\u2019re just testing out\nlanding sites and access to certain areas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>According to RAF\nBenson, the team is not just on pre-deployment training. One airman did a wave as they left, much to the utter joy of\nthe pupils,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>The Puma crews also landed alongside the Senedd in Cardiff Bay, a first for the team training in Exercise Dragon Hart.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cTeam Benson crews routinely operate in urban environments when deployed to Afghanistan as part of Op Toral, so need to practise their skills in the safety of the UK,\u201d an RAF Benson spokesperson said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Operation Toral is the codename for British military presence in Afghanistan\npost-2014 as part of NATO&#8217;s Resolute Support Mission.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are continuing to work alongside the military in a training\nexercise. You should expect to see puma helicopters flying across and landing\nat a number of sites in South Wales today and tomorrow,\u201d South Wales Police\nsaid in a tweet on Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cPlease don\u2019t be alarmed. This is part of our ongoing work to\nkeep South Wales safe,\u201d they added. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>The RAF said that\nthe Puma aircraft can carry 16 passengers, 12 fully equipped troops or up to\ntwo tonnes of freight.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It is used in a\nvariety of combat roles, such as moving troops, weapons, ammunition and stores\non the battlefield, and the extraction of casualties and in response to medical\nemergencies on the frontline.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>It is also\nemployed during non-combatant evacuations, and humanitarian and disaster relief\noperations.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>RAF Benson said that they had now completed their final night flight in Cardiff.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Puma helicopters from the RAF&#8217;s 33 Squadron have landed near the Wales Millennium Centre and Cardiff Castle, to the delight of onlookers RESIDENTS of Cardiff have been surprised by the appearance of military helicopters across the city.
