Image: Edd Church<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>She added that Cardiff North MP Anna McMorrin, and AM Julie\nMorgan have both discussed the longer-term future of the GP surgery with the\nhealth board. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut there\u2019s been far too much talking if I\u2019m honest. The\nhealth board and local government have known about this for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI respect the staff a lot. I don\u2019t go regularly, but when I\ndo, I\u2019m looked after well and have been for the 35 years I\u2019ve lived here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Dr Cath Davies, senior partner of Whitchurch Medical Centre, said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/wales-news\/whitchurch-cardiff-doctors-surgery-practice-17345807\">in December<\/a> patients \u201cdeserve better\u201d than portable buildings and that she had hoped for a brand-new centre on the grounds of Whitchurch psychiatric hospital, which closed in 2016. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>According to Mike Phillips, Conservative councillor for Whitchurch and Tongwynlais, the plan fell through because of budget restrictions and the need to find a site before the current building goes up for sale next month. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Coun Phillips said the pods are a medium-term fix for a\nlong-term problem.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s frustrating, and it\u2019s important the GPs and other\nstaff can do their jobs,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are yet to see what will happen with the Whitchurch\nhospital site, which may or may not lead to a modern and truly fit for purpose\nhealth and well-being centre.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the meantime, at least, the practice has the opportunity\nto expand within the existing site. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Although there are some fundamental compromises, staff are\nable to focus on patient care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ms Hughes raised the issue of the surgery to community group\nWhitchurch Partnerships and Communities Together (PACT), which she runs. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>At a PACT meeting on February 26, Whitchurch patient participation group member Graham Pierce said the practice was \u201cgrossly overused\u201d. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>He added that his group was told by the health board the\npods would use up car parking space, and that the expansion is not the decision\nthe medical staff wanted to accept. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis will be no good for disabled patients,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Julie Dyos, 69, a patient of Whitchurch Medical Centre, said parking was one of the biggest issues facing surgery patients. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cFortunately, I don\u2019t have to frequent the surgery as I\u2019m in\nreasonably good nick, but it does a little longer now than what it used to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>She added that she thinks the surgery\u2019s problems have not been handled well by the health board. <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Whitchurch-hospital.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Whitchurch-hospital.jpg 800w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Whitchurch-hospital-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Whitchurch-hospital-770x433.jpg 770w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Whitchurch-hospital-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Whitchurch-hospital-293x165.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Whitchurch-hospital.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41501\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Whitchurch-hospital.jpg 800w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Whitchurch-hospital-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Whitchurch-hospital-770x433.jpg 770w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Whitchurch-hospital-500x281.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/02\/Whitchurch-hospital-293x165.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>The entrance to Whitchurch Hospital, which closed in 2016. Image: Edd Church<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve known the current building is not going to be\nsuitable for years, so they should have taken some action before it became a\ncrisis,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe GPs down there and the nurses and the reception staff\nare absolutely first class, no two ways about it. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think I speak for all 11,000 patients when I say I would\ndo anything to help them out and get them what they need.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Julie Morgan AM said: \u201cIt is crucial that we get a solution\nbecause people\u2019s health depends on it. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am pleased that now it appears that there is a\npossibility of a resolution in the near future which would mean a modular\nbuilding on the present site directly linked to the current buildings. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has been a long time being sorted out and I know that\nthe staff have been very concerned about the future. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hope the solution will please everybody. Longer term I\nknow that the practice hopes to move onto the Whitchurch Hospital grounds to\nmake that its permanent base.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Cardiff and Vale University Health Board and the GP practice itself declined to confirm when the lease would be signed, or if the new build means the practice can support all 11,000 patients. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ms Hughes added that overstretched GP surgeries is a problem other areas of Cardiff struggle with too. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt isn\u2019t just our surgery,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is a concern about getting GPs, retaining them, and how many are retiring throughout the city. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur concern is obviously about ours, but it\u2019s part a greater issue.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Practice secure for seven years, but doctors make do with temporary building SENIOR partners at Whitchurch Medical Centre are expected to sign a new lease keeping it in the same building for seven years.
