I go into central Cardiff or Canton to do most of my shopping now,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s getting really sad; it doesn\u2019t look great to have all\nthese empty buildings.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ms Clement explained that she would be happy for any type of\nbusiness to move in but would ideally like to see more specialist shops which\noffer unusual products. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Another shopper, who did not want to give her name, said that a coffee shop is rumoured to be opening soon but expressed concern that it might undermine existing businesses.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt would be nice to have something that\u2019s less of a\nconflict. A butcher\u2019s, fruit and veg shop or a deli would be lovely \u2013 like an old-fashioned\nhigh street,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cWe need independent\nshops, I\u2019m sick of chains. I don\u2019t know why they\u2019re so high, especially in the High Street,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have lived here for over 40 years and there has been a\nvast change. It used to be a proper little village where you could get anything\nyou wanted. Now the empty shops are pulling the area down.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Ms Evans pointed out that there are retirement homes nearby\nand it can be difficult for older people to travel for their weekly shop.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have plenty of hairdressers and coffee shops, which I\u2019m\nnot complaining about, but it would be nice if we had fresh bread, meat or\nvegetables close by, rather than having to go to supermarkets \u2013 not everybody\ncan drive.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Kim, who owns K2 coffee shop said that nothing is worse than empty units, but fruit and veg sellers may struggle to survive because of High Street\u2019s proximity to Aldi, Lidl and Tesco. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>She said that the small area was already saturated with\ncoffee shops, but what it really needs is another place for people to access money.\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think another cash machine would bring people back into\nthe village. We definitely need it, because right now they\u2019re struggling to get\nmoney out,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf the Post Office closed, I don\u2019t know what would happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The Cardiffian visited several other High Street businesses including Garlands of Llandaff, Llandaff Pharmacy, Julian Davies Opticians and Kelvie Men\u2019s Salon, but none of the owners were available to comment. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Local shoppers agree with business owner who made Twitter appeal last week LLANDAFF residents have echoed the calls of local business owner Peter Hall, who last week urged more independent shops to move into the struggling High Street.
