More damage has been done,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Friends of Forest Farm reported that last week that someone\nhad set fire to a caterpillar carving in the park which was crafted by a local\nartist. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe worst one was the bird hide, which we replaced once,\nand now have to again with a metal one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Wallis said the hide, where people can discreetly watch\nthe park\u2019s birds, seems to be a trouble spot because it is so isolated. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cAnti-social behaviour seems to have really stepped up a\nnotch recently,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cKids want to congregate away from us. Image: Friends of Forest Farm<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>The 2018-19 stats include 120 primary and 1,772 secondary\nfires. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Stats Wales, which publishes the numbers twice per year, defines\ndeliberate primary fires as those in non-derelict houses, vehicles, those which\ncause injuries or deaths, or which were attended by five or more fire service vehicles.\n<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Secondary fires mostly include outdoor fires on grass and\nunauthorised litter burnings. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Deliberate secondary fires in South Wales overall, not just\nin woodland and grassland, were also the highest since 2011-12, at 4,365 in\n2018-19, the numbers show.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Council declined to comment on the deliberate fires\nin parks it runs and maintains, such as Forest Farm. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for South Wales Police said: \u201cThis type of\nincident can sometimes seem like a bit of fun to young people, but we\u2019ve worked\nhard to highlight the potential risks they can post to members of the public,\nthe firefighters who tackle the blazes and to those setting the fires.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIn the run-up to the summer months we remind members of the\npublic to be vigilant when out enjoying their countryside and to be mindful of\nthe dangers of small fires.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said:\n\u201cDespite these statistics, the task force is determined to continue in their\nefforts to reduce deliberate grass fires in Wales. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cDeliberate fires provide a clear and present danger to our\nenvironment, economy and communities.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur Strategic Arson Reduction Board is working together to\ndeliver on its Wales Arson Reduction Strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cRemember \u2013 deliberate grass fires are a serious crime and\nyou will be dealt with by the full force of the law. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you see anyone deliberately setting a fire, call the\nPolice on 101 or contact Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What do the numbers mean? <\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<p>The figures are taken from Stats Wales, the government\nagency which releases data on deliberate fires twice each year. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Stats Wales gets the numbers from the Home Office\u2019s fire incident\nrecording system (FIRS).<\/p>\n\n\n<p>FIRS defines deliberate fires as incidents where intentional\nignition is proven, suspected, or even doubtful. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>This means the true number of deliberate fires is likely smaller.
