{"id":42483,"date":"2020-03-13T16:08:30","date_gmt":"2020-03-13T16:08:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=42483"},"modified":"2020-03-13T16:08:30","modified_gmt":"2020-03-13T16:08:30","slug":"emiliano-sala-pilot-licensed-in-error-to-fly-doomed-plane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2020\/03\/13\/emiliano-sala-pilot-licensed-in-error-to-fly-doomed-plane\/","title":{"rendered":"Emiliano Sala pilot &#039;licensed in error&#039; to fly doomed plane"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>David Ibbotson,<\/strong> <strong>who flew the Piper\u00a0PA-46\u00a0Malibu, was probably\u00a0affected by carbon monoxide poisoning<\/strong>, <strong>official report finds<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Top-image.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42526\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Top-image.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42526\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Emiliano Sala was signed but never played for Cardiff City<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>THE pilot in the plane crash which killed Cardiff City footballer Emiliano Sala was &#8220;authorised in error&#8221; to fly the doomed aircraft, an official report reveals. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>The long-awaited report by&nbsp;the&nbsp;Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) does not apportion blame&nbsp;or liability.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n<p>But it does state that the Piper&nbsp;PA-46&nbsp;Malibu plane, which crashed into the English Channel, did not have the required license for the flight. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>It outlined three&nbsp;main&nbsp;causes for the crash:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The plane, which had autopilot, was being manually turned by the pilot when&nbsp;he lost control.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li><li>The plane&nbsp;broke up while&nbsp;moving at a speed \u2018significantly\u2019 faster than it was designed for.&nbsp;<\/li><li>The pilot was probably affected by carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning.&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>Sala, 28, was flying from Nantes, France, when the plane crashed into the English Channel on January&nbsp;21&nbsp;2019, two days after he signed for Cardiff City. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>The plane set off from Nantes at 7.06pm and was flying in the dark during poor weather conditions when it went down approximately 25 miles north-north-west of Guernsey.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;pilot, Mr Ibbotson,&nbsp;did not have&nbsp;a Night Rating on his licence, which was valid until November 2018.&nbsp; The report could not find any evidence of this being renewed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In 2017 it was reported that the aircraft had a problem where the autopilot turned itself off on occasion. It isn\u2019t clear whether this problem was ever fixed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>While the body of the Argentine player was recovered from the wreckage, Mr Ibbotson\u2019s body has never been found.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Last August, the AAIB said that toxicology tests on Sala\u2019s&nbsp;blood revealed&nbsp;potentially fatal levels of carbon monoxide, which could have triggered a seizure, heart attack or unconsciousness.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Dorset Police, the coroner and the Civil Aviation Authority are also investigating the crash.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In June, a man in his 60s from North Yorkshire was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter by an unlawful act in connection with the crash, but on Wednesday it was confirmed he would face no further action.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>A pre-inquest review is scheduled at Bournemouth Coroner\u2019s Court on Monday.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Cardiff City FC and FC Nantes remain in dispute over&nbsp;the \u00a315m transfer fee for Sala, with the Welsh team refusing to pay, claiming the&nbsp;Argentine was not&nbsp;officially their player at the time of his death.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>In September&nbsp;FIFA ruled in favour of Nantes, ordering Cardiff to pay a first&nbsp;installment&nbsp;of \u00a35.3m&nbsp;and the remainder in January, but the Bluebirds&nbsp;launched&nbsp;an&nbsp;appeal against&nbsp;the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Switzerland&nbsp;in December.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Cardiff City also passed a file to French prosecutors in January, asking them to investigate the arrangements for the flight, and wider questions about the transfer.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><strong>MORE CARDIFF CITY NEWS<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2020\/03\/13\/cardiff-v-leeds-called-off-as-league-shuts-down-until-april\/\">Cardiff City&#8217;s matches postponed until April 3 at least<\/a> <\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2020\/03\/13\/cardiff-city-signed-30-strikers-in-9-years-and-still-a-right-back-plays-up-front\/\">Cardiff City&#8217;s 30 strikers in nine years &#8211; and still a right-back up front<\/a><\/li><\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>David Ibbotson, who flew the Piper\u00a0PA-46\u00a0Malibu, was probably\u00a0affected by carbon monoxide poisoning, official report finds THE pilot in the plane crash which killed Cardiff City footballer Emiliano Sala was &#8220;authorised in error&#8221; to fly the doomed aircraft, an official report reveals.
