The report found that Welsh prison population was an an all-time high by March 27.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Robert Jones, research associate, Cardiff University, who wrote the report, said: \u201cThere were pre-existing concerns about the state of prison healthcare. Prisoners are a forgotten group, even before a pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that prisoners disproportionately suffer from physical\nand mental health problems and that, in many cases, prison healthcare is not up\nto standard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The above data compares March\u2019s prison population with the certified normal accommodation, the capacity required to maintain an uncrowded prison.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Dr Jones said that recognising overcrowding as something that needed to be tackled was key for prisoners and staff to prevent contact with someone who might have the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very difficult to socially distance in an overcrowded prison where a prisoner may be sharing a cell with one or two people,\u201d said Dr Jones. <\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-1 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-10-at-18.28.17.png\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"43320\" data-link=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?attachment_id=43320\" class=\"wp-image-43320\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Screen-Shot-2020-07-10-at-18.28.17.png\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"43320\" data-link=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?attachment_id=43320\" class=\"wp-image-43320\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n<p>The data shows a slight increase in prison population in Wales between February and March 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>While the number of prisoners has since decreased from March, this is mainly due to an early release scheme and courts not operating at the same rate as they were pre-pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Dr Jones said a lack data on Welsh prisons was still an issue. He said: &#8220;While there is some more transparency since the report, there isn&#8217;t enough.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe haven\u2019t seen much discussion about Welsh prisons.
