{"id":43340,"date":"2020-07-01T09:19:48","date_gmt":"2020-07-01T08:19:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=42974"},"modified":"2020-07-01T09:19:48","modified_gmt":"2020-07-01T08:19:48","slug":"cardiff-churches-live-stream-to-reach-worshippers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2020\/07\/01\/cardiff-churches-live-stream-to-reach-worshippers\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardiff churches live-stream to reach worshippers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some may open for private prayer, says Welsh Government<\/h3>\n\n\n<p>NEW rules published by the Welsh Government have lifted the ban on weddings and civil partnerships in Wales and allowed private prayer in places of worship.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>However, <a href=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2020\/05\/07\/the-show-must-go-on-cardiff-street-orchestra-in-lockdown\/\">social distancing<\/a> rules remain in place, meaning that churches cannot hold services except for funerals and potentially marriages or civil partnership ceremonies.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Religious leaders are able to broadcast \u201can act of worship\u201d\nover the internet, according to government guidelines. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>This has prompted some Cardiff churches to take to social\nmedia for their usual Sunday services.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Keep the faith: How churches have turned to social media during lockdown\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q5a5BlEM1M0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Keep the faith: How churches have turned to social media during lockdown\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/q5a5BlEM1M0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Chris Collins, pastor at Woodville Baptist Church, <a href=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/category\/where-you-live\/cathays\/\">Cathays<\/a>, is one of many religious leaders who has had to adapt to lockdown rules. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think that leaves a huge hole in people\u2019s lives. For some\npeople that would be their main social event of the week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The church has been uploading their Sunday morning services\nto Facebook and YouTube, using subtitling and signing for those in the\ncongregation who are deaf.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-29-at-11.51.50-1024x571.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42980\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-29-at-11.51.50-1024x571.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42980\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Woodville Baptist Church in Cathays has been uploading services to Facebook and YouTube<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Before lockdown, the church hosted a daily nursery, food\nbank and an NHS mothers\u2019 clinic, but these services, apart from the food bank,\nhave stopped. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>The Welsh Government has said that it will continue to consider how to allow places of worship to reopen for additional use in Step Three of its Roadmap, expected to be no earlier than July 4.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The Church in Wales has said that it is testing safety\nmeasures to see if social distancing will work in churches.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>These measures include maintaining a two-metre distance\nbetween people and using sufficient hygiene and cleaning protocols. Churches\nmust also complete a Covid-19 risk assessment before re-opening.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/faith-in-lockdown-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42978\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jomec.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/06\/faith-in-lockdown-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42978\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Mr Collins says that he understands the importance of the\nchurch building in certain denominations of Christianity and why some might\nwant churches to be reopened.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wouldn\u2019t be in a hurry to reopen churches for services\nbecause of the number of safety concerns and the number of people that might\nnot be able to attend because of fear and anxiety,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know there are a lot more people watching the services\nthan coming on a Sunday, even from our own people. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cChurch isn\u2019t like what it used to be 20 years ago, with the\nsame people coming every week, it\u2019s very flexible, so the main teaching and\nservices being available online is very good,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Mr Collins says the church have seen increasing views online\nthroughout the week from around the world. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI see it as a fantastic opportunity and I\u2019m really pleased\nabout the way the whole church has had to reinvent itself.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf it was 10 years ago, I\u2019m not really sure what we would\nhave done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Other churches in Cardiff have taken a similar approach. <\/p>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;When restrictions came in we had to go pretty much 100% digital,&#8221; said Gareth Blount, Next Generation Pastoral Co-ordinator at City Church.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The church has used Zoom, pre-recorded content and social media platforms to live stream services.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The most important thing was to maintain meaningful contact with everyone, but particularly many people who weren\u2019t users of anything digital. So we implemented a system of regularly phone calling all of those people who weren\u2019t able to access our online events.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>&#8220;A number of the new methods we have adopted have demonstrated wonderful care and connection for people as well as effectiveness in new areas.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n<p>Esther Jones, 23, from Heath, attends Adamstown Gospel Hall\nand says the church has been using Zoom and Facebook Live for their services.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-29-at-11.46.31.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42979\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2020\/06\/Screen-Shot-2020-06-29-at-11.46.31.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-42979\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Esther Jones, 23, has been using Zoom to connect with her church<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>\u201cChurch has really supported me throughout difficult times in my life, so not to have it and attend every week has been really difficult.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Miss Jones says she connects with her church through Zoom\nand via virtual prayer meetings during the week, but hopes churches will\nre-open soon.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>The church also uses Facebook Live to answer questions about the Christian faith.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it will change how we appreciate church for a long\ntime coming in the future, so we\u2019ll love it even more and really treasure that\nprivilege we have of going,\u201d Ms Jones added.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>Andrew Bishop, 24, who attends Highfields Church, Cathays, says\nhe is excited about the prospect of churches re-opening.<\/p>\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re very lucky to have the technology that we do now.
