National Museum<\/a> as students re-created costumes shown in the portraits.<\/p>\n\n\nSeven students from Coleg y Cymoedd made the historical\ncostumes depicted in portraits from the museum\u2019s art collection.<\/p>\n\n\n
The students, who are in their final year of the BA Costume\nConstruction course, were each assigned a portrait and made the costume shown in\nthe painting.<\/p>\n\n\n
Models wearing the costumes stood with the students in front\nof the portraits, which range from the late 17th<\/sup> century to the\nearly 20th<\/sup> century.<\/p>\n\n\nModels wore the costumes from the portraits which ranged from the 17th to early 20th centuries<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\u201cI was assigned Dorelia McNeill in a Feathered Hat<\/em> by\nAugustus John,\u201d said Martha Okon, 22, of Nantgarw. <\/p>\n\n\n\u201cThe painting is from around the 1900s, so I looked into\n1900s fashion and then looked into her. She turned out to be a bohemian figure,\nso I looked into the Suffragettes and bohemian fashion.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cFrom that, I gathered different clips from different costumes\nand outfits that would have been worn at the time and put them together to make\nthe costume of Dorelia McNeill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

They were also tasked with making the undergarments of the costumes which included corsets and side panniers – hoops worn under dresses during the 17th and 18th centuries to extend the width of the skirts. <\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cWe tend to use family and friends because it\u2019s easier for\nyou and the model as it\u2019s quite a hands-on thing,\u201d Miss Okon said.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cIt\u2019s a really, really fun thing to work on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
The one-day event, which took place on Sunday, also featured\na fashion show in front of the 246-year-old Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn organ\nafter the costumes were displayed. <\/p>\n\n\n
Lloyd Llewelyn-Jones, Professor of Ancient History at Cardiff\nUniversity, provided a commentary on the costumes and paintings and selected a\nwinner of \u2018Best Costume,\u2019 for the re-creation he thought best interpreted the assigned\nportraits. <\/p>\n\n\n
A fashion show took place in front of the Sir Watkin Williams-Wynn organ from 1774<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\nLee Phillips, of Bridgend, won \u2018Best Costume\u2019 for her re-creation of Fair Rosamund<\/em>, a 1916 painting by John William Waterhouse.<\/p>\n\n\nThe painting shows an Edwardian interpretation of medieval\ndress, so Ms Phillips said she had to take both periods into consideration when\nmaking the costume.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cI used to work with deaf and blind children before\nfreelancing as a dressmaker,\u201d said Ms Phillips.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cI was attracted to the course because of the hands-on,\nconstruction side of it. I feel it has really allowed me to expand my skills as\na dressmaker.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
Lee Phillips’s re-creation of Fair Rosamund <\/em>won ‘Best Costume’<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\nThe college partnered with the museum to organise the \u2018Fashion\nin the Frame\u2019 event, which took place on Saturday.<\/p>\n\n\n
The event came about following a conversation between course tutor, Caroline Thomas, Elen Phillips, Dress and Textile Curator for the National Museum, and Professor Llewelyn-Jones. It first took place last year.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cWe had an idea to bring the paintings to life, to look at\nthe sitters and the characters within their context,\u201d said Ms Thomas.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cThey take a 2D visual and make it 3D, and I thought that\nwas just another interesting way to tap into the Welsh bit of the museum. <\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cLast year it was so successful, so we\u2019re here today to make\nit into an ever-growing, even better thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
The students had to research and source the fabrics used in the costumes<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\nElen Phillips said the Costume Construction course has been coming to St Fagans for over 10 years to look at the historic dress collection.<\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cThis is predominantly to get them comfortable and alive in\nhistoric dress and give them tips on how to deconstruct and look at the\nmaterials and techniques used in historic dress,\u201d Ms Phillips said. <\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m a dress and textile curator and used to seeing historic\ndress flat in a drawer or modelled on a mannequin. <\/p>\n\n\n
\u201cYou never ever get to see how that costume drapes on a real\nbody, how it moves when you walk, what noise the fabric makes, how the wearer\nfelt in it.
