{"id":45372,"date":"2020-11-24T14:28:03","date_gmt":"2020-11-24T14:28:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=45372"},"modified":"2020-11-24T14:52:54","modified_gmt":"2020-11-24T14:52:54","slug":"new-cycleway-planned-for-albany-road-at-cost-of-parking-spaces","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2020\/11\/24\/new-cycleway-planned-for-albany-road-at-cost-of-parking-spaces\/","title":{"rendered":"New cycleway planned for Albany Road at cost of parking spaces"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">&#8216;<strong>Safer route for cyclists&#8217; would encourage more active travel, but some are concerned about its impact on businesses<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A POP-UP cycleway is planned to cover part of Albany Road, at the cost of parking on one side of the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This follows soon after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.gov.uk\/ENG\/resident\/Parking-roads-and-travel\/transport-projects\/Consultations\/Documents\/Wellfield%20Road%20Phase%202%20EN.pdf\">phase two plans for nearby Wellfield Road and Penylan Road<\/a> finished consultation about a month ago. Coupled with the previous plans, the majority of parking would be moved to Penylan Road which is about a five-minute walk from the main shops on Albany Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some residents are concerned that limiting parking on the street may crowd surrounding residential areas with cars and may further push businesses away from Roath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One resident, Phil Lloyd, said: \u201cSay goodbye to this as a shopping area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Council however says that the scheme can help boost local business quoting a study that says: \u201cHigh street walking, cycling and public realm improvements can increase retail sales by up to 30%.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There may be a divide in the types of shop that benefit from the new plans. Shops that people quickly stop at may be negatively affected, such as takeaways and supermarkets. If there is less parking near the shops, people are less likely to go if they have to park further away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This comes during a difficult time for the street, as <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2020\/11\/12\/albany-road-emerges-from-firebreak-with-14-empty-shops\/\">small businesses are struggling to survive through the Covid pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it also important to consider the health and environmental benefits of cycle routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep Cardiff Moving, a branch of Cardiff Council promoting active travel, say that cycling can \u201csave you money and keep you fitter and healthier.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The council also noted the differences that can be made to air quality: \u201cWe want to get the air we breathe in the city as clean as it can be.
