Now organisers are hoping for a good turn-out at the Oasis Centre on December 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt went really well actually,\u201d said board director and operations manager Phoebe Brown, who was unsure about turnout at the November event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> \u201cPeople [were] so pleased to be back together \u2026 and see familiar faces,\u201dshe said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Free coffee was also provided by local company Handlebar Barista.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Repair Caf\u00e9 Wales was started as a not-for-profit in 2017 to provide pop-up events for people to bring their broken items to be mended while having a drink and learning the skills to fix their items themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since lockdown in March the Splott and Cathays repair caf\u00e9s have worked together to create a delivery service for items needing repairing. This involved people quarantining their items before delivering them to volunteers&#8217; houses to be fixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the face-to-face repair caf\u00e9 is now back under the new Welsh rule that organised groups can meet in groups of up to 15 indoors and up to 30 outdoors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>About 24 items were fixed in total including a head torch, watch, kid&#8217;s bike, hair dryer, and a pair of trousers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSomeone looked at a gramophone,\u201d said Ms Brown. Sadly, they could not fix it because it needed special parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe often get lots of antiques [which are] really sentimental,\u201d she said, and added that Repair Caf\u00e9 Wales has some antique specialists amongst their volunteers, including one in Swansea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cafe relies on volunteers who can fix broken items, whether this is due to being trained professionally or just taking an interest in mending things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople might be retired electricians or do woodworking as a job [or] their mum might have taught them how to sew,\u201d said Ms Brown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the volunteers only attend the repair caf\u00e9s nearest them while some attend all six caf\u00e9s run throughout Cardiff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The upcoming repair caf\u00e9 will also have some craft stalls for those looking for some Christmas present. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Some of our volunteers run their own craft businesses in their own time&#8221;, said Ms Brown, &#8220;[and it would] make it a little more Christmassy&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE REPAIR caf\u00e9 in Splott has been able to restart their in-person events due to a change in restrictions for organised groups.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":551,"featured_media":45807,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,1,79],"tags":[],"coauthors":[6732],"class_list":["post-45801","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","category-outabout","category-splott"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.2 -
