He lost his life last summer, aged 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lewis &#8220;Ox&#8221; Isaac was a former student of Willows High School in Tremorfa, and had ambitions to join the army. He died in 2019, aged 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Blues paid tribute to the two in a recent match programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBoth Lewis and Si\u00f4n are past Cardiff School boys, both represented Cardiff at Dewar Shield level and were exemplary pupils who were a credit to their families and schools,\u201d said the piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLewis, who attended Willows High School, was a member of the 2010-11 squad and Si\u00f4n, who attended Ysgol Glantaf, was a member of the 2007-08 squad. Both talented players and proud to wear the Blue and Black colours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/birthsdeathsandmarriages\/deaths\/bulletins\/suicidesintheunitedkingdom\/2019registrations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Office for National Statistics reported<\/a> that the suicide rate among men in the UK was at its highest in 20 years. The most likely to be affected were men aged between 45-49.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/Figure-6_-The-highest-suicide-rates-were-seen-among-those-aged-45-to-49-years-for-males-and-50-to-54-years-for-females.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49033\" width=\"627\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/Figure-6_-The-highest-suicide-rates-were-seen-among-those-aged-45-to-49-years-for-males-and-50-to-54-years-for-females.png 700w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/Figure-6_-The-highest-suicide-rates-were-seen-among-those-aged-45-to-49-years-for-males-and-50-to-54-years-for-females-300x235.png 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/Figure-6_-The-highest-suicide-rates-were-seen-among-those-aged-45-to-49-years-for-males-and-50-to-54-years-for-females-293x230.png 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/Figure-6_-The-highest-suicide-rates-were-seen-among-those-aged-45-to-49-years-for-males-and-50-to-54-years-for-females.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-49033\" width=\"627\" height=\"492\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/Figure-6_-The-highest-suicide-rates-were-seen-among-those-aged-45-to-49-years-for-males-and-50-to-54-years-for-females.png 700w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/Figure-6_-The-highest-suicide-rates-were-seen-among-those-aged-45-to-49-years-for-males-and-50-to-54-years-for-females-300x235.png 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/02\/Figure-6_-The-highest-suicide-rates-were-seen-among-those-aged-45-to-49-years-for-males-and-50-to-54-years-for-females-293x230.png 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 627px) 100vw, 627px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, rates among younger groups for both men and women have also increased significantly, with suicide among women under 25 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.samaritans.org\/wales\/about-samaritans\/research-policy\/suicide-facts-and-figures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">increasing by around 94%<\/a> since 2012.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a complicated public health issue, that can arise from many different factors, including relationship breakdown, substance abuse, or past trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A<a href=\"https:\/\/media.samaritans.org\/documents\/Socioeconomic_disadvantage_and_suicidal_behaviour_bilingual.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> report published by Samaritans<\/a> in 2017 found that the risk of suicide was much greater for people living in deprived areas, for those who were unemployed or in debt, and those on irregular or short-term work contracts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jrf.org.uk\/report\/poverty-wales-2020\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Joseph Roundtree Foundation<\/a> last year reported that more than a quarter of people living in Wales were below the poverty line, even before the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Suicide is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/suicide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highly preventable<\/a> when the right support is in place. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bmj.com\/content\/371\/bmj.m4352\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The British Medical Journal<\/a> emphasises the need to ensure access to mental health services for all who need them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feeling part of a community is also important, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/action\/showPdf?pii=S2215-0366%2820%2930171-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Lancet suggests<\/a> regularly checking in with friends, family and neighbours, using digital methods like Zoom where face-to-face interaction isn\u2019t possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mental health has been a frequent topic of conversation since the first set of national lockdown measures were introduced last March, as many became cut off from their loved ones for long stretches of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chris Myhill admits he\u2019s felt some of the sting of this, but completing the January challenge has helped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve definitely had ups and downs throughout the pandemic, and maybe before that as well.
