However, Mike Phillips\u2019 try for Wales was actually illegal.\u00a0 Here we look back at what happened, and why match officials were heavily criticised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Wales scores illegal try against Ireland in 2011 6 Nations\" width=\"1200\" height=\"900\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4lHmPKq_Hx4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; BBC Sport Wales (@BBCSportWales) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCSportWales\/status\/1356150298528505856?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 1, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Ireland captain Brian O&#8217;Driscoll had not seen the line-out error, half the Irish team protested to the match referee but were shooed away.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When referee Jonathan Kaplan asked his touch judge Peter Allan whether it was the correct ball,  Allan answered &#8220;Yes&#8221; hotly-disputed try resulted in a bitter row between match officials and the Ireland side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O\u2019Driscoll said after the match: \u201cSo I stood there and before anything else could be said, he [Kaplan] awarded the try.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I did mention it to him a few minutes later after I had seen it on the TV and I told him that it was a massive momentum swinger and that it had had a huge bearing on the game, but he just shrugged that off.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I just wish Mike Phillips could have come on last week to score a controversial* try.<br><br>*Some say illegal.
