teachers have had to adapt to online learning and classroom restrictions, in addition to navigating the usual work their academic qualifications demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Since February 22 schools in Wales have been conducting a phased return to the classroom in addition to the continuing teaching of pupils whose parents are key workers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"512\" loading=\"lazy\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI definitely found the online learning challenging,\u201d said Isaac Thomas, 21, a newly qualified primary school teacher at Ysgol Gynradd Gymraeg Cwmnedd.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite unprecedented times, Adam Marsden, who is completing the salaried route for the Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the Open University, feels confident in his ability and future as a teacher.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe new challenges that all student teachers had to take on this year has shown our capability to adapt and persevere when things become difficult,\u201d said Mr Marsden.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtual learning has been an adjustment for all teachers, but this can be especially daunting for a trainee or newly qualified teacher as they try to build relationships with the pupils.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI felt the children couldn\u2019t learn as much as face to face, not every child was engaged and there was only so much variation I could do online,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Differing learning abilities and attempting to accommodate every child and parent made the job seem \u201calmost impossible\u201d said Mr Thomas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrew Marsh, a student teacher at Cardiff Metropolitan University, said forming relationships with the pupils was difficult when teaching online but has seen it as a positive opportunity to enhance his skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt has given me an insight into both Google classrooms and blended learning and my digital competence has massively increased,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Marsden, 29, added:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe are the student teachers who had to come up with creative ways to engage learners and track their progress through many different online platforms.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel these skills will carry positively into future teaching endeavours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the PGCE being different to what was expected because of lockdown, Mr Marsh, said he has still received valuable experience from the course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Marsden, also describes his PGCE experience as a positive one, despite the circumstances. In 2020 he was able to teach face-to-face:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cDuring this period, I was able to gain invaluable insight from my mentor and other teachers in the school with plenty of opportunity to get involved with teaching lessons and activities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Marsh, 22, is looking forward to being back in the classroom, \u201cprior to the Christmas break I found myself enjoying the role of a teacher\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since returning to the classroom two weeks ago, Mr Thomas has noticed a decline in some children\u2019s ability to write and their fluency in Welsh.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has adopted a \u201cback to basics\u201d approach in order to help the children adjust back into school life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Thomas, 21, feels frustrated that teachers aren\u2019t prioritised in the vaccine roll-out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve just started doing these lateral flow tests, which give you results in half an hour. It\u2019s kind of frustrating I feel. The government feel the need for constant testing, but we aren\u2019t prioritised for the vaccine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Wales the <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2021\/02\/26\/wales-will-not-prioritise-specific-occupations-for-coronavirus-vaccine\/\">vaccine roll-out <\/a>began with prioritising key workers and is now based on age groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Laura Doel, Director of National Association Head Teachers Cymru said:&nbsp;\u201cOur education workforce is being relied upon to lead Wales out of the pandemic.
