The physical exhaustion, the mental and emotional toll can be a lot to cope with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The media paints those early experiences as a constant joyous celebration, full of baby classes, coffee dates and the epitome of Britishness \u2013 going to the pub to wet the baby\u2019s head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then on March 23, 2020, the world as many parents and expectant parents knew it turned upside down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a time that often feels isolated and stressful, mothers have relied on each other for help and support. It was not my plan to have a baby in such a difficult time, but it&#8217;s a gift so we accepted it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was always planning to have three kids so at first, I felt happy. Then I felt lost because I had no idea how can I keep two kids at home, be pregnant and then have a third child?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feeling afraid and lost is not uncommon for parents and attending scans and the baby\u2019s birth are often some of the major bonding moments for parents, but Chuhan, like many other women, was forced to go through these major stages alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBecause it\u2019s my third child I\u2019m kind of experienced. As her children could not speak any English, she and her husband sent them to a nursery, but in an instant the teaching, which she sees as vital, was ripped away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTheir language development at the moment is not good enough to go to school. I barely can speak English at home because it&#8217;s just me and my husband, we talk in Mandarin, so sometimes my brain is not working about English at all,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chuhan added: \u201cTheir language has made very little progress at the moment even though we have stayed here for a long time. I&#8217;m worried because my daughter needs to go to reception this year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pandemic has seen communities and families ripped apart, making what can be an often lonely time for mothers even more isolating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSometimes I have the urge to ask my friend \u2018can I go to your house after the pandemic\u2019 because I really want to see a real person and my children sometimes asking, \u2018can we go outside to see friend or something like that?\u2019 And I&#8217;m saying no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut they they&#8217;re confused. They don&#8217;t understand what&#8217;s happening,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the hardest parts for Chuhan is being unable to see her extended family. Usually, they would travel to China every six months, attending major cultural events, such as the Spring Festival.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/158297587_122564596410047_9052503688941688746_n-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51684\" width=\"370\" height=\"405\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/158297587_122564596410047_9052503688941688746_n-1-768x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-51684\" width=\"370\" height=\"405\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption><strong>Trying to keep children occupied at home has been a difficult task for many parents.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Chuhan\u2019s mother even planned to travel to the UK in December to support her after the baby was born. Chuhan said the busy household and lack of additional support early on has meant these early months have been a very stressful time for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m under a lot of pressure because they have sibling battles at home, and I can&#8217;t have my time to rest as I\u2019m always surrounded by the children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m either playing with them, tidying the house or doing some cleaning jobs. My husband did help me a lot, but we have three kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey need our full attention, so it\u2019s basically like a 24 hour job to us at the moment,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nevertheless, if there is one thing we have all learnt during the pandemic, it is not to take for granted the people that we love and the opportunities we have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo many things are precious, but we just assume this is common and normal. After the pandemic we found no it isn&#8217;t, there&#8217;s so many things that are affected.
