It is owned by an 87-year-old woman who is just about to be released from hospital. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She can\u2019t return to an insecure home, but getting the help that she needs is difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cShe can&#8217;t take out a mortgage or re-mortgage or loan in hospital because that\u2019s classed as being under distress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe support workers faced red tape, red tape, red tape but one of them reached out to us,\u201d explained Paul Gwilym, the founder and CEO of Cardiff-based homelessness charity Boomerang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is hard for charities to justify to its trustees how it wants to spend money on a case by case basis. It turns out that Paul lives just down the street in Splott but the two never met, he can\u2019t even tell me her name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boomerang was set up by Paul to help working-class families, the \u201ceveryday Joe Public\u201d who have hit a rough patch and are in financial crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It works closely with the community and  there is no &#8220;one glove fits all&#8221; approach when it comes to helping people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During Covid, Boomerang has been especially busy, not only with more donations and furniture coming in but also with people needing more support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI remember one day, in between lockdowns, there were 22 cars all lined up outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were like kids saying how amazing it is to see how many people are going out of their way give to us,\u201d said Paul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile in the first weeks of lockdown, when pubs, clubs and hospitality venues closed, tons of perishable food was donated simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think we worked out in a week \u00a340,000 of food was collected and given out when the lockdown first hit,\u201d said Paul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was crazy,\u201d added Dave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While both Paul and Dave remained positive about the past year, they also remember how scared they all were when lockdown first hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was uncharted territory, nobody knew what direction to go to, it was like a lightning bolt you could go left, right or straight on and you just hoped you\u2019d arrive,\u201d said Paul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He described the struggle of securing PPE and not wanting to put his 54 volunteers at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the pandemic has brought communities together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think people have identified that, you know, I am part of a community, I am part of something which is special, I will look after my neighbour,\u201d said Paul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the people that has answered a community need during this difficult time is Tara Beverstock, 34, of Cardiff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"491\" height=\"1024\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/75253023_10219992360945125_228239114774773760_o-1-491x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52028\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/75253023_10219992360945125_228239114774773760_o-1-491x1024.jpg 491w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/75253023_10219992360945125_228239114774773760_o-1-144x300.jpg 144w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/75253023_10219992360945125_228239114774773760_o-1-293x611.jpg 293w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/75253023_10219992360945125_228239114774773760_o-1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"491\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/75253023_10219992360945125_228239114774773760_o-1-491x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-52028\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/75253023_10219992360945125_228239114774773760_o-1-491x1024.jpg 491w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/75253023_10219992360945125_228239114774773760_o-1-144x300.jpg 144w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/75253023_10219992360945125_228239114774773760_o-1-293x611.jpg 293w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/03\/75253023_10219992360945125_228239114774773760_o-1.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption><strong>Tara Beverstock with husband Dave. <\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On December 20 Tara and her husband David decided to help those people they feared would not be able to afford food and necessities over Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They created a Facebook group called All Year Round and in the four days in the run-up to Christmas they sourced and distributed 75 food and toy parcels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the two didn\u2019t plan to continue the group into the New Year, they changed their mind as more people started to reach out saying they\u2019d love to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Soon they expanded the range of donations collected and, at one point, furnished a three-bedroom house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou name it we\u2019ve done it,\u201d Tara told me with a laugh over the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Currently the group has 528 members and has helped over 290 families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere were a few families we&#8217;ve helped to get back up on their feet, which is great,\u201d said Tara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While people\u2019s need for necessities such as food and furniture has been great, the need for human interaction is just as vital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Tara, who has a young daughter, it is the reason she started planning family-friendly (and Covid-safe) events. She organised Santa visits, and for Easter (April 3rd) she is <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2021\/02\/19\/cardiff-family-organises-free-childrens-easter-event\/\"><span class=\"has-inline-color has-vivid-cyan-blue-color\">hosting an egg hunt<\/span><\/a>, in August there will be a summer fair and another Santa-themed event is coming in winter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul, meanwhile, tells me about how he has realised the need for people to have a bit of chat while they drop off donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a very nice elderly couple maybe in their 70s of 80s and they come regularly and every time we have coffee and biscuits and a 20-minute chat with them,\u201d he told me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems that no matter how dire things get, there are always people who want to come together to lend a helping hand. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As the pandemic brings unprecedent hardship to families, the  community came together<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":555,"featured_media":52013,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[7152,79],"tags":[7170,10,227,3354,6769,841],"coauthors":[6729],"class_list":["post-52010","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-a-year-of-covid-in-cardiff","category-splott","tag-boomerang","tag-charity","tag-community","tag-community-action","tag-covid-3","tag-homelessness"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.2 -
