{"id":54284,"date":"2021-11-09T16:22:10","date_gmt":"2021-11-09T16:22:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=54284"},"modified":"2021-11-09T17:23:39","modified_gmt":"2021-11-09T17:23:39","slug":"changing-the-habits-of-a-lifetime-the-activists-making-rhiwbina-greener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2021\/11\/09\/changing-the-habits-of-a-lifetime-the-activists-making-rhiwbina-greener\/","title":{"rendered":"Meet the activists making Rhiwbina greener"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">As Cardiff marches for COP, climate campaigners are making their neighbourhoods more environmentally friendly<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>THE COP 26 conference is drawing to a close in Glasgow, but back in Rhiwbina campaigners are carrying on their fight to make their area more sustainable. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One activist group, Rhiwbina Eco Team, is a step closer to becoming an official registered charity, thanks to a \u00a32,000 donation from Juboraj, a local restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group, which started with just eight members, today includes 40 volunteers. Initially a collection of Rhiwbina residents concerned about the climate crisis, the movement really kicked off when Eco-Team member Pamela Ireland noticed a Twitter post complaining about the spread of invasive plants around Rhiwbina Brook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She rallied a group of volunteers, and they managed to clear the entire brook of the invasive weeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt really showed us what was possible,\u201d explained Ms Ireland, 61. \u201cIt\u2019s what we aim to do, promote activities within the community that people can join in and really contribute to.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, the group has installed a community noticeboard, organised clothes swaps and co-ordinated with local councillors to set up a future community orchard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Their most recent event, an Eco-Day in Parc y Pentre Park, attracted over 240 people, and included the opportunity for attendees to write messages to COP 26 on origami boats which were sent to Glasgow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/Hnet.com-image-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54332\" width=\"262\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/Hnet.com-image-8.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/Hnet.com-image-8-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/Hnet.com-image-8-293x391.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 262px) 100vw, 262px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/Hnet.com-image-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54332\" width=\"262\" height=\"350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/Hnet.com-image-8.jpg 320w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/Hnet.com-image-8-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/Hnet.com-image-8-293x391.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 262px) 100vw, 262px\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Rhiwbina Brook, after being cleared of the invasive Himalayan Balsam by Rhiwbina Eco Team <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Member Naomi England, 43,  was part of a wave of activists inspired by David Attenborough\u2019s Blue Planet 2. Frustrated at the lack of action over climate change, she began the Rhiwbina Against Plastic Facebook Page in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wanted to feel like I could turn round to my children at a later date in my life and say that I tried to do something,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since then, the page has amassed over a thousand followers. Rhiwbina Against Plastic has also organised regular recycling drives, the most recent of which collected 60kg worth of material.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Changing the habits of a lifetime<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the most difficult challenges the Rhiwbina campaigners face is encouraging people to make the lifestyle changes needed to protect the environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou can\u2019t turn around to the coffee shops and say \u2018stop using plastic take-away cups\u2019 because they\u2019ll go out of business,\u201d said Ms England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a common problem. One recent survey found that despite increasing awareness of the climate crisis, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/nov\/07\/few-willing-to-change-lifestyle-climate-survey\">few people were willing to change their lifestyles to save the planet.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Siop Sero, a zero-waste shop on Beulah Road, aims to change that. Since it opened six months ago, it has attempted to make Rhiwbina a &#8220;plastic-free village&#8221; by selling plastic-free goods alongside a range of environmentally-friendly products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome people find it a bit overwhelming and think they have to change their whole pantry,\u201d said owner Catherine Richards, 41. \u201cPeople are changing habits of a lifetime, so it\u2019s about changing them slowly, and that makes it more likely that you\u2019ll keep it going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her attempts to make Rhiwbina a plastic-free zone have seen some success. Local businesses are increasingly becoming more sustainable, with Snail\u2019s deli ditching plastic packaging and Calon Boutique stocking &#8220;thought clothing&#8221; made from natural organic materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPeople think that if you get environmentally friendly products, it\u2019s a lot more expensive,\u201d said Eco-Team member John Isaacson, 59.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think that\u2019s one of the messages we need to get across, that it doesn\u2019t cost any more to make those changes.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/253343609_563177438114394_8975376863977477319_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54314\" width=\"314\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/253343609_563177438114394_8975376863977477319_n.jpg 640w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/253343609_563177438114394_8975376863977477319_n-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/253343609_563177438114394_8975376863977477319_n-293x220.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 314px) 100vw, 314px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/253343609_563177438114394_8975376863977477319_n.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54314\" width=\"314\" height=\"235\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/253343609_563177438114394_8975376863977477319_n.jpg 640w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/253343609_563177438114394_8975376863977477319_n-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/11\/253343609_563177438114394_8975376863977477319_n-293x220.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 314px) 100vw, 314px\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Siop Sero, the zero-waste shop aiming to make Rhiwbina a plastic-free village<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Dealing with climate anxiety<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the past few years, &#8220;climate anxiety&#8221; has become <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2021\/oct\/31\/eco-anxiety-over-climate-crisis-suffered-by-all-ages-and-classes\">an increasingly prominent issue<\/a> among both activists and young people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a problem that activists in Rhiwbina are well aware of, and one which Rhiwbina against Plastic and the Eco-Team want to combat by collaborating on an Eco-Kids initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This initiative would see activists run session at local schools to raise awareness among children and parents while also combatting negativity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We want it to be a positive thing for them so that people feel like they are actually doing something and making a difference,&#8221; said Ms England.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It\u2019s so easy for people to always think that climate change is too big and feel helpless.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Ireland said: &#8220;Like everyone else I suffer from a bit of climate anxiety and a bit of doom and gloom.
