{"id":54702,"date":"2021-11-16T14:49:08","date_gmt":"2021-11-16T14:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=54702"},"modified":"2021-12-06T18:56:28","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T18:56:28","slug":"rompney-castle-pub-demolition-would-change-rumney-forever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2021\/11\/16\/rompney-castle-pub-demolition-would-change-rumney-forever\/","title":{"rendered":"Rompney Castle pub demolition &#8216;would change Rumney forever&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Wentloog Road venue has been around for nearly 150 years but faces demolition after being sold during lockdown<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>ROMPNEY Castle pub is facing demolition after being sold to an architectural practice during lockdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff-based company Sunder Architects has proposed a <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2020\/03\/10\/3m-llys-eurwg-housing-development-officially-opened\/\">development<\/a> to turn the site into 26 one-bedroom flats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has applied to Cardiff Council for full planning permission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the plan is facing enormous opposition from members of the Rumney community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sammy Lou Rex from Wentloog Road said: \u201cThe pub is the focal point of Rumney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were there most days; we would pop in after work. Even the younger generations went there.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cath Davies, 61, said: \u201cIt gives Rumney a good, iconic identity, and its demolition would change Rumney forever.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillors Jaqueline Parry and Bob Derbyshire have also voiced their opposition to the proposed development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u2018We\u2019ve lost enough of our historic buildings in Rumney, we don\u2019t want any more concrete boxes,\u201d said Coun Parry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coun Derbyshire added: \u201c\u2018It\u2019s the heart of the old village. The priority (for me) is to get it back open as a public house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Another landmark Cardiff pub looks to be demolished. With tales of it being a favourite among pirates, bought by the wife of an American ambassador + remodelled in the 19th century, a long colourful history set to become rubble. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/foclhEbWuv\">pic.twitter.com\/foclhEbWuv<\/a><\/p>&mdash; G (@gomedia91) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/gomedia91\/status\/1451317532942553088?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 21, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A petition has been created by members of the community to stop the development from happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It currently has 500 signatures and has the support of councillors Parry and Derbyshire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coun Derbyshire has also contacted Cadw to try and get the building listed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m in the process of trying to get it listed by Cadw, but I haven\u2019t heard anything back from them yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jon Wilks, a director at Amity Planning, which is working for Sunder, said: \u201cThe existing building has been vacant for some time and there has been little interest in reopening as a public house.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is an evidenced need for new homes of all tenures across Cardiff, more than 2,000 new homes every year between 2006 and 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A worker at Sunder Architects who wanted to remain anonymous because of backlash from the community said: \u201cThe pub has been empty for years and it\u2019s a nuisance.
