{"id":54712,"date":"2021-11-16T17:07:12","date_gmt":"2021-11-16T17:07:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=54712"},"modified":"2022-06-30T17:17:45","modified_gmt":"2022-06-30T16:17:45","slug":"big-sweep-lives-up-to-its-name-in-pontcanna-and-riverside","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2021\/11\/16\/big-sweep-lives-up-to-its-name-in-pontcanna-and-riverside\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Sweep lives up to its name in Pontcanna and Riverside"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Residents and the council unite to clear streets of leaves to prevent flooding and pavement slips<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>THE annual Big Sweep has commenced for its seventh consecutive year in Pontcanna and Riverside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative designed to clear the leaves that gather in the area\u2019s tree-lined streets is a collaborative event between Cardiff Council and residents to combat drain blockages and general slipping hazards for pedestrians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residents gathered at the weekend to sweep the fallen leaves into piles which were later collected by the council using mechanical sweepers and a large truck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Local Councillor for Riverside and Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport, Caro Wild, said: \u201cThe respect between the council staff and the residents is a really nice thing. Photo by Cerys Jones. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Big Sweep is an initiative comprised of five events including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sunday 7 November \u2013 Conwy Road and Tuberville Place<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saturday 13th November \u2013 Talbot Street, Ryder Street, and Pitman Street<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sunday 21st November \u2013 Severn Grove<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saturday 27th November \u2013 Pontcanna Street, Plastutron Gardens, Plasturton Avenue and Plasturton Place<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Saturday 4th December \u2013 S.Riverside, Neville Street, Despenser Street, S.Morgan \/ Wellington Street corner and Wyndham Street<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The communal aspect of the event was emphasised by both residents and council staff present at Saturday\u2019s sweep on Talbot Street, Ryder Street and Pitman Street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pitman Street Resident, Joseph Foster, 76 said: \u201cThe Big Sweep brings people together, making the community more of a community. People come out and meet each other and talk to each other. Sometimes, you only meet new people through events like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Labour councillor for Riverside, Kanaya Singh, echoed Mr Foster&#8217;s comment: \u201cIt\u2019s a fantastic community event. Everyone gets involved. Photo by Cerys Jones. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Some members of the community felt the event should occur later in the year, when more leaves have fallen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ryder Street Resident, Finn Carolan, 52 said: I think it would be better if the council scheduled it at a later date because the leaves are still on the trees at the moment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another resident, who asked to remain anonymous, said the council had been forced into the sweeps after a notice was pinned to a tree in Severn Grove which read \u201cShame on Cardiff Council for ignoring their road sweeping duties\u201d, which led to 75 people cleaning the street one week later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coun Wild said: \u201cThe Big Sweep started on Talbot Street by residents who were concerned about flash flooding. Residents have been doing it since then and really enjoy the helping and socialising.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next sweep will occur on Sunday, November 21 at Severn Grove.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pontcanna and Riverside residents can report hazardous fallen leaves through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cardiff.gov.uk\/ENG\/resident\/cardiff-gov-app\/Pages\/default.aspx\">Cardiff GOV
