{"id":55263,"date":"2021-11-23T13:00:06","date_gmt":"2021-11-23T13:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=55263"},"modified":"2021-11-23T13:00:07","modified_gmt":"2021-11-23T13:00:07","slug":"cardiff-poised-for-quarters-but-can-they-overcome-in-form-merthyr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2021\/11\/23\/cardiff-poised-for-quarters-but-can-they-overcome-in-form-merthyr\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardiff poised for quarters but can they overcome in-form Merthyr?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">This weekend Cardiff face high scorers Merthyr in a tough game at the Arms Park<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>SECOND place Cardiff will look to overcome third place Merthyr RFC on Saturday in the final group game of the Eastern Indigo Group Premiership Cup..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Merthyr do not yet have qualification to the quarter finals confirmed, only two points will get them through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Cardiff RFC spokesperson said: \u2018\u2019It is going to be tough; we expect a fast and open game with a lot of tries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Merthyr are on some rich form, have plenty of quality players and are a very strong side.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff will be feeling confident on the back of their first win at Pontypridd since 2009. They put 31 past top spot Newport last weekend and 61 at home to Pontypridd the week before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8221;It&#8217;s never possible to be fully confident going into a game against Merthyr as they have been one of the best squads in the league and have been the most successful side over the last few years,&#8221; added Mr Pearce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8221;The Cardiff squad is looking relatively settled now and we are playing really good rugby, so I&#8217;d suggest we are slight favourites heading into the game. Being right at the top of the table and battling for silverware has to be the aim.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the final round of group games before the quarter final spots are confirmed for the eastern division. Newport and Cardiff have already qualified, but the next two spots still hang in the balance with Merthyr, RGC and Pontypridd playing for third and fourth spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The quarters are due to take place around May 2022.
