{"id":55853,"date":"2021-11-30T15:53:56","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T15:53:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=55853"},"modified":"2021-12-01T12:49:09","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T12:49:09","slug":"campaigners-appeal-for-cladding-victims-to-stand-at-council-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2021\/11\/30\/campaigners-appeal-for-cladding-victims-to-stand-at-council-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"Campaigners appeal for cladding victims to stand at council elections"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Welsh Cladiators hope to fill two new seats on Butetown ballot<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A CAMPAIGN group is searching for Cardiff Bay cladding victims to stand in the city council elections next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Welsh Cladiators want residents affected by cladding issues  to run as independent councillors for the Butetown Ward, which will go from having one councillor to three in the May 2022 vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of people who are just very disappointed with what they see as a very passive response from Cardiff Council to the plight of victims in the Bay,\u201d said Mark Thomas, 63, who is a Celestia Development leaseholder and a member of the Welsh Claditators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cWe have lobbied Cardiff Council hard for sanctions against developers who refuse to remediate their fire defective buildings as well as asking for other support, but the response has been very poor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBy putting up some councillors who are victims of this crisis we hope we can make a difference.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Councillor Saeed Ebrahim is currently Butetown\u2019s only councillor. She said that the estimated remediation costs for the site are around \u00a360,000 for each flat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI spend hours every day working on this crisis trying to establish facts, understanding fire regulations and building specifications, and campaigning. This should not sit with me to do,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is no way, when signing our leasehold contracts to pay for maintenance, that residents could have imagined this would be held as legally binding to make us accountable for full building remediation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have done everything society told me to do \u2013 put effort into my education, worked my entire life, and saved hard \u2013 and now I could lose my home due to absolutely no fault of my own.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deborah Polverino, 59, is also a leaseholder in Victoria Wharf whose annual service charge rose from \u00a33,000 to \u00a37,800 in the past year to cover the costs of increased insurance, safety fittings, and fire wardens who patrol the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cThe money is of course a very big issue, but do you know what it\u2019s like lying in your bed at night just not knowing whether you\u2019re safe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something that we live with every day and there is a lot of anxiety that goes along with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Polverino is one of many members of the Welsh Cladiators who are hoping that residents in Cardiff Bay affected by the cladding scandal will come forward to represent them in the council elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt just goes on and it goes on and I don\u2019t know how long for,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf there were a few more councillors who lived in these properties, then maybe more would be done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Next May&#39;s <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cardiffcouncil?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@cardiffcouncil<\/a> Elections in Cardiff Bay &#8211; Interested in standing as an Independent Home Fire Safety Candidate?
