{"id":56049,"date":"2021-11-30T16:22:14","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T16:22:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=56049"},"modified":"2021-11-30T16:22:46","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T16:22:46","slug":"vale-council-foots-47000-bill-to-remove-abandoned-boats-as-culprits-fined-2000","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2021\/11\/30\/vale-council-foots-47000-bill-to-remove-abandoned-boats-as-culprits-fined-2000\/","title":{"rendered":"Vale Council foots \u00a347,000 bill to remove abandoned boats as culprits fined \u00a32,000"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The men who dumped the boats have paid only \u00a31,940 in fines and legal fees<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>THE VALE of Glamorgan Council paid more than \u00a347,000 to remove two abandoned fishing boats from Old Harbour in Barry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vale tax payers footed the bill after the offenders paid only \u00a31,940 in fines and legal fees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Cardiffian <\/em>submitted a Freedom of Information request which revealed that the vessel <em>Morning Dawn<\/em> cost \u00a339,290 to remove and <em>Alisa <\/em>\u00a37,858.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two men were prosecuted in October for breaching maritime law after they sailed the two boats into the harbour without permission from the Council and left them to fall into a state of disrepair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Dawe was ordered to pay \u00a3600 in fines, \u00a350 for each offence, and \u00a3620 in legal costs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Statham had to pay the same amount towards legal costs but will not pay additional fines as he was not deemed to be the main protagonist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Old Harbour and Watch Tower Bay now have access restrictions from for the safe removal of an abandoned vessel on the harbour wall at the Old Harbour at Barry for approximately one week. <br><br>The ship is damaging the harbour wall and the local environment and must be removed. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TRB1LmBuDd\">pic.twitter.com\/TRB1LmBuDd<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Vale Council (@VOGCouncil) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VOGCouncil\/status\/1419967801276698624?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 27, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Council has previously said that it was \u201cconsidering&#8221; whether to pursue other avenues to recover remaining costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Council spokesperson told <em>The Cardiffian<\/em> that there was \u201cno update\u201d regarding the Council&#8217;s effort to recover the costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement released after October\u2019s hearing,  Councillor Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet member for Neighbourhood Services and Transport said: \u201cI am aware of the strength of feeling within the local community regarding these boats and I\u2019m pleased that we have been able to take decisive action in this case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese vessels were left to decline in Barry Harbour where they became eyesores and posed an environmental and safety risk. The Council had to use public funds to have them removed after the owners refused to deal with the matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the boats had to be broken up in the harbour by a specialist of the abandoned boats shown by the red marker<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Coastguard was called to the harbour in April when <em>Morning Dawn <\/em>became loose, posing a danger to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andrew Wright, a Barry resident who has been a seafarer all of his working life, said: \u201cThe Old Harbour has been a magnet for boats that are not acceptable elsewhere due to severe leaks, poor maintenance and other various conditions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey are usually someone&#8217;s good idea at the time, and they do not realise the costs involved of running a vessel of even modest size.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I believe these two vessels were turned away from Cardiff Bay due to pollution coming from the vessels.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div
