{"id":56150,"date":"2021-11-30T16:03:25","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T16:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=56150"},"modified":"2021-11-30T16:17:49","modified_gmt":"2021-11-30T16:17:49","slug":"friends-of-hailey-park-elects-first-new-leader-for-14-years","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2021\/11\/30\/friends-of-hailey-park-elects-first-new-leader-for-14-years\/","title":{"rendered":"Friends of Hailey Park elects first new leader for 14 years"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The group&#8217;s AGM welcomed a new committee as well as a replacement for their long-standing chair   <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>FRIENDS of Hailey Park has elected its new committee after Penny Bowers, who was one of the founders of the group in 2007, stepped down from the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Russell Todd, 45, of Mary Street, Llandaff North, has been promoted as the new Chair after the group&#8217;s AGM was held on Thursday, November 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Todd has lived in Llandaff North since 2006 and been a committee member of the Friends group since 2009. He is currently self-employed, running several community initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He is the founder of two podcasts, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.podcastpeldroed.cymru\/\">Podcast P\u00eal-droed<\/a>, which discusses Welsh football, and The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thecommunitydevelopmentpodcast.co.uk\/\">Community Development Podcast<\/a>. Within Llandaff North, Mr Todd leads the Philosophy In Pubs <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cf14_pip\">group<\/a> at The Railway Pub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He has also created <a href=\"https:\/\/www.valleysaletrails.wales\/\">Valleys Ale Trails<\/a>, which promotes pub and brewery culture of the Welsh Valleys, and <a href=\"https:\/\/growsocialcapital.org.uk\/\">Grow Social Capital<\/a>, addressing changing levels of social capital in society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Todd said: \u201cThere needs to be something behind individuals to keep everything above board.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI figured I\u2019d be happy to do that because my background is community work, working in the voluntary sector and helping community groups set up. It&#8217;s all about achieving, in some cases, radical change and challenging forms of oppression.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you look at the pressure on green spaces in cities from housing developers, I would argue that is a form of oppression. Things like the demand for quick profit, like what&#8217;s happening with the pipeline underneath the park to service the huge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.walesonline.co.uk\/news\/local-news\/what-cardiffs-new-7000-home-11740793\">Plasdwr<\/a> housing development, do have an impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The assault on the planet and the climate is a form of oppression. We&#8217;ve got to make the most of the green spaces. However, she will still remain a part of Friends of Hailey Park as a committee member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/llannerch?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@llannerch<\/a> is our new chair with Paul Rock and Angela Perrett taking on the treasurer and secretary roles<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/PennyBeee?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@PennyBeee<\/a> is remaining on the committee &#8211; we wouldn&#39;t let her escape completely \ud83d\ude1c &#8211; as is Anita Smith<\/p>&mdash; Friends Of Hailey Park | Cyfeillion Parc Hailey (@HaileyPkCardiff) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HaileyPkCardiff\/status\/1463805678938726404?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 25, 2021<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Bowers said: &#8220;Through the lockdown, I realised the things I was the happiest doing, which are to do with nature conservation and responsible dog ownership, so I&#8217;m continuing with those.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She will also continue to maintain the Friends of Hailey Park <a href=\"http:\/\/www.friendsofhaileypark.org.uk\/\">website<\/a>, newsletter, and Twitter account.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Stepping down means that I can do my role at a different pace,\u201d Ms Bowers said. \u201cIt also means Russell will have more energy to do other things that I might not have been able to do because I was doing too much.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She looks forward to Mr Todd becoming Chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I was so pleased when he mentioned months ago that he might be interested. Friends of Hailey Park elected Angela Perrett as its Secretary, and Lindy Clifton, Sarah James, and Essex Havard all joined as committee members.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Clifton has lived in Llandaff North for three years and has loved having Hailey Park as her \u201cfront garden\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cWhen the river flooded a couple of years ago, I started picking up the debris left and ten bags later, began to extend the area back into the Park. I do a litter pick a couple of times a week, concentrating on the river bank and children&#8217;s play spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI looked up the Park&#8217;s website and started to join in the volunteer Sunday afternoons, helping Gareth the Park Ranger with a bit of the path clearance and common land conservation. It&#8217;s also a great way to make new friends as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI have time, I enjoy the Park, and I appreciate all it has to offer and those who help make it happen.
