{"id":57253,"date":"2021-12-14T16:21:04","date_gmt":"2021-12-14T16:21:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=57253"},"modified":"2021-12-14T16:35:06","modified_gmt":"2021-12-14T16:35:06","slug":"tiger-bay-rapper-promoting-mental-health-awareness-in-disadvantaged-areas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2021\/12\/14\/tiger-bay-rapper-promoting-mental-health-awareness-in-disadvantaged-areas\/","title":{"rendered":"The Tiger Bay rapper promoting mental health awareness in disadvantaged areas"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jimbo spoke to the<em> Cardiffian<\/em> about his music which captures the harsh reality of gang culture, knife crime and mental health issues.<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>AFTER his friend <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2019\/02\/15\/sister-of-cardiff-murder-victim-calls-killers-cowards\/\">Malaciah Thomas<\/a> was stabbed in 2018, James Bowen, 26, from Tiger Bay grieved through music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Bowen, known as Jimbo, said: \u201cI started releasing music after my friend passed away, and it was to keep his legacy alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI do a lot of my music just to make him proud.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Jimbo released his first song \u2018Mallysworld\u2019 in 2020. Music was my way.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He now tries to help others realise the emotionally healing properties of music as a tool for expressing difficult emotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jimbo said:  &#8220;I try to get them to get behind a&nbsp;booth&nbsp;or make some beats&nbsp;so they don\u2019t end up down that path. It\u2019s a nice coping mechanism.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jimbo provides a refreshing take on rap and drill, which can be stereotyped as focusing on crime and drugs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He described his music and perspective as \u201cdrill music that is coming from those same streets, but showing you what it\u2019s actually like, not just promoting a culture that most people are lying about in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI\u2019d like to be the person that changes their view on that sort of music.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the strain on the NHS and mental health charities, access to wellbeing services relies heavily on economic privileges. Professional help is not there for everyone according to Jimbo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cWhenever I&#8217;ve \u2018gone off the rails\u2019 it&#8217;s always been my people \u2013 my friends, the Fewsion group and Jon, or my girlfriend &#8211; that have got me out. It\u2019s never been the doctors or Mind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jon Fews, who runs the wellbeing organisation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/fewsioncollective\/\">Fewsion<\/a>, initially discovered Jimbo from a sample of &#8220;Mallysworld&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Fews said: \u201cI don\u2019t think there\u2019s enough mental health help out there. I think if you\u2019re middle-class potentially, and you\u2019ve got a great family and support network behind you and money, there&#8217;s lots of help. But for us, there isn\u2019t. Music is therapy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Jimbo believes that knife crime is getting worse in some parts of Cardiff and thinks that music could help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve tried to speak to some producers about getting the younger kids in the studios one night a month so that we can try and tackle what&#8217;s going on here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThere\u2019s no youth groups or anything to get that generation out of the streets and I think that an open studio or even an open mic night would definitely make changes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Talking about his next steps as an artist, Jimbo is looking forward to his upcoming project called \u201cFrom the Tigers\u201d, which pays homage to Tiger Bay where he grew up. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He and Mr Fews are currently looking for interview clips from the community about Tiger Bay and Grangetown to add to the introduction of the album.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jimbo said: &#8220;We want to hear people\u2019s own stories about the Tigers, bringing the community into the project.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His first gig was set to be on the 4<sup>th<\/sup> December in CULTVR Lab, but it was cancelled as the DJ contracted COVID.
