Graeme, 44, is a full-time paramedic and a Royal National Lifeboat Institution volunteer <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">The first time I speak to Graeme on the phone he is with a patient. He has been working a shift with the ambulance service and was expecting a call from a doctor. He apologises for not being able to speak, and we re-arrange for the following day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cWorking over Christmas as a paramedic is very strange. I try to get out of it as much as I can but sometimes you can\u2019t,\u201d he tells me. \u201cIt sucks, but you\u2019ve just got to accept it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cYou get the build-up to Christmas that everyone else has, and then Christmas morning, you get to work, they wish you a happy Christmas and if you\u2019re lucky someone might cook you a nice breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cYou check your vehicle then you&#8217;re out on your first job straight away, It\u2019s just like any other day of the year. You&#8217;d think it would be something different but it\u2019s not.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignfull has-parallax\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/12\/Credit-RNLI-Penarth-resize-1-1024x654.jpg);min-height:748px;aspect-ratio:unset;\"><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignfull has-parallax\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/12\/RNLI-Penarth-1-Graeme-far-left-1024x768.jpg);min-height:1102px;aspect-ratio:unset;\"><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Graeme, from Penarth, joined the ambulance service in 2003 and became a paramedic in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">For paramedics, Christmas day can be just as busy as any other.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">I ask him to describe a typical Christmas day shift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cChristmas morning is usually kind of quiet,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cWe often have to deal with some of the people who\u2019ve gone out on Christmas Eve night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cFrom lunchtime onwards, it\u2019s usually the elderly we have to help. Grandparents come around the house, overindulge, and collapse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cIt quickly becomes just like any other work day. Some of these people might get into trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cUnfortunately, there also seem to be more suicides around Christmas and January than any other time of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cIt\u2019s a strange time for some people, they can get quite depressed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Graeme first started volunteering with the RNLI as part of the Duke of Edinburgh Award in school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cThat was when I was 16, and I\u2019m now 44, so that gives you some idea of how long ago that was. After completing the award they asked me if I fancied joining the crew, so I did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">There are around 30 volunteers at Penarth RNLI, consisting of helms, fully-trained crew, trainee crew, tractor drivers and managers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">The most common Christmas callouts for the Penarth crew are boats breaking down and needing assistance, or people getting cut off by the tide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cPeople often want to go out for a nice walk for Christmas day and are unaware of the tides. Especially around the Penarth area. It\u2019s not often but it does happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cWe\u2019ve got the second highest tidal range in the world here in the Bristol Channel. The tide can rise half a metre in half an hour or less, so it\u2019s very easy to get caught out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cA few years ago on Christmas morning, around 11am, my pager went off, so I went down to the station.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">&#8220;Somebody had been spotted from the cliffs in difficulty.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cWhen we got there we found that it was just some debris that had been washed down the channel. It was a relief that it was nothing but in some ways it was frustrating that we were called out for nothing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Christmas time can be difficult not just for those working or on call, but for their families as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Graeme says: \u201cIt\u2019s tough, but they\u2019re kind of used to it. They just accept now that some years they won\u2019t see me. This year, I\u2019m not going to be seeing my family at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote has-background is-style-solid-color\" style=\"background-color:#090e56\"><blockquote class=\"has-text-color has-white-color\"><p>As a helmsman you have to make important decisions. If anything happens, it\u2019s down to you<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">Graeme is a lifeboat helmsman, which means he is responsible for everyone onboard. This brings with it a lot of pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">As he explains: \u201cYou are in charge of the boat and of the search, the whole situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cDecisions you make can influence the rescue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cI could be called into the coroner&#8217;s court and asked &#8216;Why did you decide to do that?&#8217; It\u2019s a high level of responsibility.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">RNLI callouts can involve great risk for the crew. Graeme tells me about an incident which happened eight years ago when the RNLI Penarth was tasked with searching for a missing man off the coast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">The crew launched late at night in storm-force conditions. Crews from Barry and Weston-super-Mare as well as a coastguard helicopter were also involved in the search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cWe couldn\u2019t see the waves because it was so dark. That\u2019s the honest answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cIt helps that I\u2019ve done my ambulance job for so long now. When I hand the keys back in at the end of the shift, I can switch off, and that\u2019s it. My job is done for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">&#8220;it\u2019s just become like any other job, that\u2019s the way I treat it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cI go to the gym, I\u2019ve got good friends, I focus on my family. I\u2019ve got a daughter who\u2019s a big part of my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cBut there are some cases that you do take home with you and you do think about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">\u201cLuckily, I\u2019ve got a good network of friends and colleagues who I can talk to if something\u2019s wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:18px\">With two high-pressure jobs to balance, this Christmas is set to be a busy one for Graeme.
