{"id":5775,"date":"2015-03-10T17:08:41","date_gmt":"2015-03-10T17:08:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/?p=5775"},"modified":"2015-03-10T17:08:41","modified_gmt":"2015-03-10T17:08:41","slug":"where-to-find-cardiffs-first-bitcoin-atm-and-why-you-probably-havent-heard-about-it","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2015\/03\/10\/where-to-find-cardiffs-first-bitcoin-atm-and-why-you-probably-havent-heard-about-it\/","title":{"rendered":"Where to find Cardiff\u2019s first Bitcoin ATM (and why you probably haven&#039;t heard about it)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Wales\u2019s first Bitcoin ATM was switched on for use at the end of last month and you probably didn\u2019t hear about it.<br \/>\nConfusion in the press meant that while excitement built online about a launch supposedly happening in a St Marys Street location on the 27 February, when the day came it turned out this was just a rumour.<br \/>\nMeanwhile the real introduction of the virtual currency ATM to the capital passed quietly under the radar on the 26th.<br \/>\nSimon Miles, 29, is the tech investor from Merthyr Tydfil behind Wales\u2019s\u00a0<i>real <\/i>first Bitcoin ATM located at Castle Emporium on Womanby Street, previously known as Cardiff Fashion Quarter.<br \/>\n\u201cI have had the idea in my mind to install a Bitcoin in Cardiff for about a year,&#8221; he said.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5776\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC_0369-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Bitcoin ATM Castle Emporium\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5776\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC_0369-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Bitcoin ATM Castle Emporium\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/noscript>\u201cThe most difficult part was finding a location. Firstly, most people didn\u2019t know what Bitcoin was. Secondly, it can get a lot of negative press which puts people off.<br \/>\n\u201cThe team at Castle Emporium seemed keen and that was great. We wanted to be part of their relaunch on March 1 so we held off on publicity.<br \/>\n\u201cWhat really took the wind out of our sails was when about a week before, we read online that another machine was launching. Because we wanted to maintain the status of being first, we launched quickly on the 26th. But unfortunately for the other venue &#8211; and for us &#8211; it didn\u2019t go ahead.<br \/>\n\u201cInitially I was disappointed to see there was going to be a machine so close but now I think it would be good to see more in Wales as it is good competition and it is good for the community.\u201d<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-5777 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC_0376-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Man using Bitcoin ATM\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-5777 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC_0376-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Man using Bitcoin ATM\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/noscript><br \/>\n\u201cWe\u2019re currently the only one but we are still going to maintain competitive prices compared to online.\u201d<br \/>\n\u201cThe advantage of a machine over only is that even though online is fast, an ATM is still quicker. The price of Bitcoins can be quite volatile, so you could buy at \u00a3200 a bitcoin and by the time it has been released the worth could have gone down to \u00a3180.\u201d<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-5778 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC_0371-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Bitcoin ATM screen\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-5778 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/DSC_0371-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"Bitcoin ATM screen\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" \/><\/noscript>James Morgan-Rees, Manager at Castle Emporium, explained why he was keen to embrace the new market.<br \/>\n\u201cWe had heard of the technology and thought it was a good idea.<br \/>\n\u201cThis is a way of keeping up with what\u2019s current. We have had a few people coming in and using the machine. It is still very new technology and people have been a bit unsure about what it does, but I think it will be successful. It is good to have the first one in Wales.<br \/>\n\u201cBristol can be a bit more up-to-date with these things but Cardiff is catching up.\u201d<br \/>\nThe machine at Castle Emporium remains Cardiff\u2019s only working Bitcoin ATM and is located just to the right of the doorway to the vintage market.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5784 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bitt-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"What is Bitcoin?\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-5784 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/bitt-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"What is Bitcoin?\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" \/><\/noscript>An\u00a0ATM has also been installed in CeX goods trading store in St Davids shopping centre, however it is not yet available to use and staff say they do not know when it will launch.<br \/>\nCeX is one of only four Cardiff businesses, along with Lobster Digital Marketing, Maryjane Essentials and Your Sushi Cardiff, to do trade using Bitcoin.
