{"id":58316,"date":"2021-12-19T13:31:56","date_gmt":"2021-12-19T13:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=58316"},"modified":"2021-12-19T13:31:58","modified_gmt":"2021-12-19T13:31:58","slug":"stories-from-the-pandemic-the-return-of-boxing-in-wales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2021\/12\/19\/stories-from-the-pandemic-the-return-of-boxing-in-wales\/","title":{"rendered":"Stories from the pandemic: The return of boxing in Wales"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em>Three Cardiff-based boxers share their experiences without the sport during <\/em>Covid<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>BOXING is back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After 18 months without amateur boxing competitions, the inaugural Welsh Box Cup took place in October 2021, marking the first domestic fixture since March 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During this time, gyms opened and closed leaving fighters in the dark over their futures in the sport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many boxers were left confused, frustrated, and upset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of those boxers was me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the last three years, boxing has been a vital part of my everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It became my outlet when life got too much and a way to express myself when nothing else would do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Without the sport, I felt lost and unstable, as if all meaning had been stripped from my life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was this very personal experience that led me to ask questions \u2014 how did other boxers deal with the pandemic? And how have things changed now that boxing competitions are back?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignfull has-background-dim has-parallax\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/12\/boxing-g6fa23f0c0_1920-1024x745.jpg)\"><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Chloe Perry<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Like many young boxers, 20-year-old Chloe Perry, from Cathays, fell into a rut when competitions stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe pandemic affected me really badly, I got into the habit of sitting in my room and playing video games all day. I lost a lot of motivation, and I was really down,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to the pandemic, Chloe was in a rich vein of form, winning the 2019 Welsh Championships and the 2020 BUCS Championships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this momentum would come to a grinding halt when gyms were closed across the country, leaving boxers like Chloe without a crucial stabilising force in their lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe lockdown stopped me in my tracks, I was in the form of my life and then everything changed,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing out of my routine of education and boxing every day threw me off. At phase three, clubs were able to take part in indoor training sessions, sparring, and, crucially, competitive events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This decision brought boxing back to the masses and injected purpose into many fighters\u2019 lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Chloe&#8217;s case, it was a chance to get back on track and follow her dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was really depressed during the pandemic, and it is only recently I\u2019ve moved past that. When gyms started opening back up again and competitions came back my mental health began to improve,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;I\u2019m so happy that boxing is finally back.&#8221;<\/p><cite>Chloe Perry<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignfull has-background-dim has-parallax\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2021\/12\/boxing-g164b24ea0_1920-ConvertImage-1-1024x791.jpg)\"><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Joe Smith<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Joe Smith, 23, from Caerau, struggled a lot with motivation when the pandemic hit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t do much training to be honest, at the start of Covid I did, but I thought it would only be a couple of weeks, eventually I got fed up and ended up going out to party most nights,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Boxing was the discipline in Joe\u2019s life and without it, he fell into the traps that so many young people do. The majority of their income is made through tickets sales and with no fans there was no small hall boxing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, for Kyran it was a case of staying fit and waiting for his opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, that opportunity came in September of this year at the Vale Sports Arena in Cardiff where Jones won his debut bout on points against Michal Gazdik.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was swiftly followed by another points victory over Vladimir Fleischhauer three weeks ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;It has been great in getting me off the streets, teaching me discipline and self-motivation, I can&#8217;t thank boxing enough for what it&#8217;s done for me.
