{"id":5933,"date":"2015-03-13T14:21:52","date_gmt":"2015-03-13T14:21:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/?p=5933"},"modified":"2015-03-13T14:21:52","modified_gmt":"2015-03-13T14:21:52","slug":"hop-becomes-hip-in-cardiff-as-gardeners-help-produce-beer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2015\/03\/13\/hop-becomes-hip-in-cardiff-as-gardeners-help-produce-beer\/","title":{"rendered":"Hop becomes hip in Cardiff as gardeners help produce beer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You could join an inventive\u00a0group of Cardiff gardeners who have taken a hop, skip and a jump towards producing 1,000 litres of their very own beer.<br \/>\nGardeners and beer lovers are being encouraged to become crop growers as part of <a href=\"http:\/\/wearecardiff.co.uk\/2014\/03\/02\/calling-all-homebrewers-cardiff-hops-needs-you\/\">Cardiff Hops<\/a>, a project supported by Cardiff Transition, which helps people to grow green hop and eventually use the harvest to make Cardiff\u2019s own beer, the Taff Temptress.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop4_print.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-5943 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop4_print-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"hop\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-medium wp-image-5943 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop4_print-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"hop\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript><\/a><br \/>\nLast year, with around 60 growers, <a href=\"http:\/\/wearecardiff.co.uk\/2014\/03\/02\/calling-all-homebrewers-cardiff-hops-needs-you\/\">Cardiff Hop<\/a>s harvested 10kg of fresh hop, which made a batch of 500 litres of beer.<br \/>\nThis year, more than 130 people have already signed up to grow the plant in their gardens or allotments and with an estimated 90 successful growers with plants ready for harvest come the autumn, <a href=\"http:\/\/wearecardiff.co.uk\/2014\/03\/02\/calling-all-homebrewers-cardiff-hops-needs-you\/\">Cardiff Hops<\/a> is hoping to make 1,000 litres of the Cardiff brew in 2015.<br \/>\nWith a starter kit worth \u00a320, which include seedlings of a variety of dwarf green hop called Prima Donna, participants are ready to start growing their plants.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5945\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5945\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop6_print.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5945 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop6_print-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Hop\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5945\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5945 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop6_print-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Hop\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> A pint served in Pipes<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThe hop is harvested over 24 hours in September and directly taken to Pipes, a microbrewery and bar in Pontcanna, which only has another 24 hour to brew the plants into beer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">The Taff Temptress is then served in Pipes, and all growers are rewarded for their work with discounted bottles of their home-grown beer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">Simon Holt, 32, who initiated the project in Cardiff, said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">\u201cI was quite fortunate that the team in London wanted to see if it would work outside of London. The project was launched from one capital to another.<\/p>\n<blockquote style=\"padding-left: 120px\">\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">\u201cI thought it was a great idea, it supports local economy and it\u2019s about getting local people growing the plant according to their own interest and it just worked.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 120px\">\u201cI think growing a new green hop ale is pretty cool and because there is only 48 hours to get the hop in beer, big commercial enterprises can\u2019t do it so it\u2019s a unique opportunity that no one else can do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Holt is meeting with the British Hop Association next week to negotiate the opening of Wales\u2019 first hop farm outside Cardiff. So far, the plants have been imported from Kent.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5942\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5942\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop3_print.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5942 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop3_print-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"hop\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5942\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5942 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop3_print-300x180.jpg\" alt=\"hop\" width=\"300\" height=\"180\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> Preparing the crop<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nHe said: \u201cThe plant itself is very beautiful to garden and and it has a lot of character. The idea is that the plant can also be used for crafts, parts of the vines can be used to make baskets, the tips of the plant can be used as asparagus substitute and it can even be used as sleeping pills.\u201d<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5940\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5940\" style=\"width: 224px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop1_print.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5940 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop1_print-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"Hop\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5940\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5940 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop1_print-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"Hop\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> Hop plants growing<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\nHop plants don\u2019t need a huge amount of ground space and they can be planted in pots of 45 litres if there is enough space for the roots. The Prima Donna variety of hop is scaled for domestic growing so they can grow to a height of just over 3 feet and their yield is lower and more manageable than other types of hops.<br \/>\n<figure id=\"attachment_5941\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5941\" style=\"width: 170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop2_print.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-image-5941 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop2_print-170x300.jpg\" alt=\"Hop\" width=\"170\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-5941\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-5941 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/CF_hop2_print-170x300.jpg\" alt=\"Hop\" width=\"170\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript><\/a> The picked crop<\/figcaption><\/figure><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nFree from pests, the plant can live for 30 years. Rhodri Malin, who joined the project last year, said: \u201cThe hops are very condition-specific and develop different aromas from their environment, which gives them geographical specific flavours.<br \/>\n\u201cSo every year the taste will be different. Last year, we made a 5.1 per cent pale ale. It had a citrus note and it really smelt of fresh hops.
