Photo: Fred Davies<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Club Secretary Jeffrey Wilson said: \u201cIt\u2019s a terrible shame to be losing such a fabulous fishing facility in Cardiff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have been fighting for fishing at these reservoirs since 2004 when they turfed us off at short notice. But since then, our membership has dwindled from 250 members down to about 20 or 25.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Wilson says Welsh Water normally give two reasons explaining why they aren\u2019t allowed to fish on the reservoirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, that casting a fly is dangerous to the public, and secondly, the site is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and fishermen will damage the ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Mr Wilson says: \u201cThere is no evidence that casting a fly has ever hurt a member of the public. If this was the case, we would fish from a boat anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs for the SSSI, they say they don\u2019t want us trampling on the rare fungi, but we\u2019ve been trampling on it for 60 years and it\u2019s still there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey (Welsh Water) are making facetious excuses to stop the fishing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Llanishen and Lisvane reservoirs have been fished since 1910, when a season ticket cost one guinea, about \u00a382 in today\u2019s money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the next 94 years, anglers enjoyed catching trout from one of Wales\u2019 most productive fisheries. Photo: Fred Davies.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Rhys Matthews, 36, would also like to see fishing reintroduced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt would be great to open the reservoirs to fly fishing as there are no other stillwaters in Cardiff and the next closest is Ynysyfro in Newport but that has been closed for two years by Welsh Water,\u201d said the Cardiff angler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another Welsh Water-owned fishery called Wentwood Reservoir, near Newport, was closed and drained in 2017 for repairs casting doubt on fishing prospects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Welsh Water owns 91 reservoirs varying in size and manages the single largest group of stillwater trout fisheries in the UK.
