{"id":6118,"date":"2015-03-17T11:45:37","date_gmt":"2015-03-17T11:45:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/?p=6118"},"modified":"2015-03-17T11:45:37","modified_gmt":"2015-03-17T11:45:37","slug":"more-than-1000-children-taken-to-hospital-with-dog-bites-last-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2015\/03\/17\/more-than-1000-children-taken-to-hospital-with-dog-bites-last-year\/","title":{"rendered":"More than 1,000 children taken to hospital with dog bites last year"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some say they are a man\u2019s best friend, so most people wouldn\u2019t think twice about learning how to behave around their beloved pet dog, or even someone else\u2019s.<br \/>\nYet over a thousand children were taken to hospital in the UK with dog bites in the past year, most of whom were between 0-9 years old.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6122\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/dog-113513_1280-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"dog-113513_1280\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-6122\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/dog-113513_1280-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"dog-113513_1280\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" \/><\/noscript>Meanwhile research by animal welfare charity Dogs Trust shows nearly 25 per cent of parents in Wales would allow their child to approach a dog they don&#8217;t know, but the majority do not know all the signs that a dog may be agitated.<br \/>\nNow Dogs Trust are launching a campaign to remind parents and children in Wales that safety precautions should always be taken around animals.<br \/>\nThey have developed a simple set of rules which they want all children to be taught to help them interact with dogs in a safe way.<br \/>\nDogs Trust employees will be visiting schools, libraries and community centres delivering Be Dog Smart workshops to educate children and adults alike about safety around animals.<br \/>\nDogs Trust Chief Executive Adrian Burder said: &#8220;Children can come into contact with dogs every day and being around dogs can have so many wonderful benefits, but the simple fact is that all dogs have teeth and any dog can bite or snap if worried, scared or hurt.<br \/>\n\u201cSo, to reduce the number of dog attacks, whether you are a dog owner or not, it is important that we all know and teach our children, grandchildren, pupils and friends how to behave around dogs.<br \/>\n\u201cAll children remember their Green Cross Code and we want Be Dog Smart to be just as well known.\u201d<br \/>\n<strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><br \/>\n<b><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\" size-full wp-image-6157 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/dogtrust.jpeg\" alt=\"dogtrust\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-6157 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/dogtrust.jpeg\" alt=\"dogtrust\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/noscript>The Dogs Trust\u2019s Top 10 Tips for children around dogs are:<\/b><br \/>\nBeware of disturbing dogs that are eating or sleeping<br \/>\nEven if for fun, don&#8217;t ever tease a dog<br \/>\nDon&#8217;t approach a dog with no owner around<br \/>\nOnly stroke a dog when the owner says &#8216;Yes, you can&#8217;<br \/>\nGet the dog to sniff your hand first, then stroke gently<br \/>\nStrange dog approaching?
