It\u2019s very clear that they can easily fall through a bit of a gap.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tai Pawb\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.taipawb.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/FINAL-Tai-Pawb-Refugee-Housing-Feasibility.pdf\">2019 feasibility study<\/a> found that a lack of stable accommodation for refugees was a severe issue, <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2021\/12\/19\/the-forgotten-christmas-stories-asylum-seekers-in-cardiff\/\">especially in Cardiff<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2018, Cardiff had 1,293 asylum seekers living in dispersed accommodation, far higher than any other city in Wales and England, and one respondent who worked in the sector told the study that every refugee they worked with had experienced homelessness at some point.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"644\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3-1024x644.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3-1024x644.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3-770x484.jpg 770w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3-500x314.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3-293x184.jpg 293w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3.jpg 1094w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"644\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3-1024x644.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-61298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3-1024x644.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3-770x484.jpg 770w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3-500x314.jpg 500w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3-293x184.jpg 293w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/TB3.jpg 1094w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve been to Housing Options, they advised me to start looking for a private rented property,\u201d one refugee interviewed for the 2019 report told Tai Pawb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve already looked online at Rightmove, Zoopla and Gumtree but when I follow properties up, they say they will not accept me because I\u2019m currently unemployed and on benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To address these challenges, Tai Pawb has partnered with Oasis Refugee Centre to provide more short-term accommodation for refugees and asylum seekers in Cardiff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project, which began in June of last year, will look to recruit social housing providers to release extra housing stock in order to house refugees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis project is effectively a dream come true for us, following the recommendations from the feasibility study\u201d said Ross Thomas, Tai Pawb\u2019s Head of Policy and Public Affairs Manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWorking to get better accommodation, better provision, and allowing asylum seekers to contribute as refugees in Wales to society in the local community has been something we\u2019ve been really frustrated we haven\u2019t been able to do until now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More than 30 housing providers have signed up to Tai Pawb\u2019s \u2018Deeds not Words\u2019 pledge, which includes a commitment to free up properties to house refugees. The organisation is confident more will follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSome of these social providers have several thousand homes,\u201d said Mr Thomas. \u201cSo there is definitely the capacity for project is really about trying to find good solutions that help people in the short term,\u201d said Ms Hollinshead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re looking to set up short term options for them to be able to concentrate on finding work, reconnecting with family and building up some of the skills that they need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under UK-wide immigration policy, asylum seekers in Wales generally have no access to public funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, since the pandemic began in 2020, the Welsh government has stepped in to provide temporary accommodation to refugees and people at risk of homelessness under emergency health legislation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, with the end of the pandemic in sight, concerns are growing about what will happen once these measures are rolled back and the funding dries up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere is genuinely a cliff edge now,\u201d said Mr Thomas. \u201cWhen there is a return to no recourse to public funds, there is going to be quite a crisis
