{"id":61719,"date":"2022-02-08T17:27:16","date_gmt":"2022-02-08T17:27:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=61719"},"modified":"2022-02-08T17:27:18","modified_gmt":"2022-02-08T17:27:18","slug":"park-could-become-home-to-long-lost-heritage-trees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2022\/02\/08\/park-could-become-home-to-long-lost-heritage-trees\/","title":{"rendered":"Park could become home to long-lost heritage trees"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"volunteers-secure-1-500-to-rejuvenate-overlooked-canton-park\">Volunteers secure \u00a31,500 to rejuvenate overlooked Canton park<\/h4>\n\n\n<p>CANTON\u2019S Sanatorium Park could be replanted with long-lost Welsh heritage trees as part of a\u00a0<br \/>project to rejuvenate the area and help prevent flooding.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:post-content --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Ann Bateman, from Canton, is one of a group of volunteers who have secured a \u00a31,500 grant to improve the park.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSanatorium Park is quite a wild park \u2013 there\u2019s a lot of flooding and vandalism there, and building in the area displaced a lot of the amphibian population,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>It is hoped that planting more trees would help with drainage as the park is often waterlogged since the development of new houses nearby. There are also three schools in the area.<\/p>\n<p>Ann and the other volunteers are working alongside Cardiff Council\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/businesswales.gov.wales\/walesruralnetwork\/news-events-and-case-studies\/news\/ps1-million-funding-coed-caerdydd-urban-forest-project\">Coed Caerdydd<\/a> tree-planting project, launched in November. Heritage fruit trees, for industries such as cider-making, used to be planted all around the area, and it\u2019s great that we can bring those trees back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cardiff has seen a large amount of damage to trees in recent weeks, <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2022\/02\/04\/trees-vandalised-in-splott-are-to-be-replaced\/\">with eight saplings in Splott destroyed in late January<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>Sanatorium Park is frequently the target of vandals and trees have been destroyed there. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Ann said: &#8220;A lot of trees are being cut down in Cardiff at the moment. I did a walk of the site with a park ranger recently and a lot of the trees in the area have sadly been vandalised.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p>The volunteers hope to work with local schools in future to discourage vandalism.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ann\u2019s group secured the \u00a31,500 grant via ChangeX, an Irish company that describes itself as a<br \/>\u201cmarketplace for social change.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw this funding and we were able to get \u00a31,500 for the park. A lot of the initiatives they fund are in Ireland or the United States, so we\u2019re hoping it gets international support.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/wp:paragraph --><!-- wp:paragraph --><\/p>\n<p><!--
