I was born opposite the Cardiff Royal Infirmary and I still live in Splott,\u201d&nbsp;he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I&#39;m delighted and extremely proud to  announce my latest oil painting, <br><br>Titled, Capel i Bawb : Chapel for All, commissioned by <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/CavuhbArts?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@CavuhbArts<\/a> will be on permanent display at the Chapel, Royal infirmary (Adamsdown Library) from 17th March 2021 <br><br>Dimensions 4 x 3ft <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Me2xK0lSRV\">pic.twitter.com\/Me2xK0lSRV<\/a><\/p>&mdash; malcolm murphy (@malmurphyart) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/malmurphyart\/status\/1491764618708103175?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 10, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy mother used to work in the Cardiff Royal Infirmary cleaning, and I spent a few nights being treated there,\u201d said Mr Murphy, 51, who took 60 hours to paint the piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Repurposing the chapel<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The chapel, which is a grade II listed building, was closed to the public in 1999. It has since been restored and now serves as a meeting place, gallery and cafe for CRI patients, visitors and the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many now defunct churches in Cardiff have undergone similar transformations, becoming museums, cafes and even arts venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=1raOso9OFC981iVs3eHWJMu62f5SaRVM&amp;ehbc=2E312F\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\">&lt;\/p&gt;<\/iframe><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Navigate the map and click the pins to read more about other repurposed churches in Cardiff. The red pin is CRI Chapel.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The painting of the chapel was commissioned by the Arts for Health and Wellbeing Programme at Cardiff &amp; Vale Health Charity, and prints were gifted to Cardiff Royal Infirmary staff and supporters with funding from the Staff Lottery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Run by Cardiff and Vale University Health Board, the programme promotes art in hospitals, with galleries and exhibits to improve health and wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also encourages staff and patients to participate in creative arts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline\">Art in the Community<\/span><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As a local artist, Mr Murphy takes part in fundraising schemes in and around Cardiff. In 2020, he donated a painting of Cardiff Street Orchestra to the Arts for Health and Wellbeing Programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignfull is-light has-parallax\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/02\/EWnI2Klw.jpg);min-height:634px;aspect-ratio:unset;\"><span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-cover__background has-background-dim\"><\/span><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-large-font-size\"><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A souvenir of the first lockdown, Cardiff Street Orchestra was a group of musicians who did socially-distanced performances to cheer people up in 2020.<\/strong> Image: Malcolm Murphy<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was put on display at the <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffandvale.art\/work\/visual-arts\/\">Hearth Gallery<\/a>, at University Hospital Llandough in Penarth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Murphy has been painting commercially since he was 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI learned to paint by doing pictorials \u2013 the swinging pub signs. It is closely linked to me and it is important to a lot of Cardiffians.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Doing a project on this scale, I think you have got to have a feeling for it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;If I was to go to London, and somebody said to me, &#8216;Paint me that chapel over there,&#8217; I wouldn&#8217;t have that feeling for it. I could do it and it would be a lovely picture, but I don&#8217;t think it would have that personal essence, that homely feel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo many people have found solace at the chapel.
