{"id":63525,"date":"2022-02-25T13:28:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-25T13:28:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=63525"},"modified":"2022-02-26T11:59:10","modified_gmt":"2022-02-26T11:59:10","slug":"the-pandemic-helped-me-find-out-who-i-really-am-the-latest-rebirth-of-renaissance-woman-tara-bethan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2022\/02\/25\/the-pandemic-helped-me-find-out-who-i-really-am-the-latest-rebirth-of-renaissance-woman-tara-bethan\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018The pandemic helped me find out who I really am&#8217;: The latest rebirth of renaissance woman Tara Bethan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The presenter, actress, musician and podcast host <strong><em>tells Aled Lloyd-Biston<\/em> <\/strong>how the Covid-19 pandemic changed her life<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>TARA Bethan lost all her work when the country went into lockdown. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst most people were working from home, cultural butterfly Tara had lost all her freelance work and didn\u2019t know what she was going to do next. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;&#8216;Who was Tara Bethan going to be?&#8217; was the question I often asked myself,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know where the next opportunity was going to come from, it was scary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it came in the form of creating a podcast: \u201cMy friend Llinos said there was an Arts Council grant and she said why don\u2019t we do a mental health podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very open about my mental health struggles and I love speaking about it. For me, it helps lessen the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She created a list of Welsh-speaking celebrities she wanted on the podcast, including the likes of Radio DJ Huw Stephens and novelist Manon Steffan Ros, and began recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t know what reaction it would get, I was a bit scared about how people would receive it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEspecially with Welsh-speaking Wales, when people ask you how you are, you always say you\u2019re okay, even if you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her podcast, DEWR, which means &#8216;Brave&#8217;, discusses the ups and downs of life and how the arts can help with both challenging and happy times &#8211; and Tara wants to learn from other people\u2019s experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love speaking about life. I want to compare people\u2019s life notes with each other because I can learn from them. When people tell me about how they deal with struggle, I can learn from that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Award-winning podcast<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The podcast won the Best Welsh Podcast award at the British Podcast Awards last year, a moment that Tara described as overwhelming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI felt like I had an out of body experience. Winning it was a defining moment in who I am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s changed my life completely and made me stop doubting myself as much. If this has normalised speaking about it then hell yeah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s definitely made me feel less lonely because I\u2019ve always felt like an outsider. People have spoken more to me, so it\u2019s an honour if that\u2019s what people are doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Who would be her dream guest on DEWR? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy absolute dream is to get Mark Drakeford on the podcast. I get the politician, but I want to know the man.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe cares about human and life and I want to speak about that. If one day I can get Mark Drakeford on DEWR my life is complete.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The birth of Tara Bandito<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tara has wanted to release music for 20 years, but feared of being judged, sharing her mental health struggles on her podcast has changed that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf people judge my music, then they judge me, and I was afraid of that,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut if people like me in the podcast, they\u2019ll like my music.
