{"id":64327,"date":"2022-03-11T15:10:35","date_gmt":"2022-03-11T15:10:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=64327"},"modified":"2022-03-11T15:57:50","modified_gmt":"2022-03-11T15:57:50","slug":"the-micro-greengrocer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2022\/03\/11\/the-micro-greengrocer\/","title":{"rendered":"The Micro Greengrocer bringing vertical farming to Cardiff"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Penarth resident&#8217;s microgreen business celebrated its one-year anniversary last week<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WALKING over the Penarth Road bridge it would be easy to miss the containers tucked around the side of the looming Big Yellow Self-Storage building. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On a rainy Thursday morning I nearly did just that, but the Curran Embankment Road led me to the silver containers that are home to a multitude of businesses. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might be out-of-the-way, but <a href=\"https:\/\/themicrogreengrocer.co.uk\/\">The Micro Greengrocer<\/a> certainly does not disappoint. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As I entered through the sliding door, Amanda Wood welcomed me into the future of urban farming. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The silver shelves housed trays of growing <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2022\/03\/08\/grangetown-gardening-group-wants-to-make-the-most-of-green-spaces\/\">seedlings<\/a> that would be harvested later that day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ranging from Basil, Broccoli, China Rose, Coriander, Fenugreek, Radish Rambo, Wheatgrass, Sunflower, Tendril Pea \u2013 the seedlings provided bright colours to the otherwise grey walls of the container. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"625\" height=\"469\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/03\/20220310_100512985_iOS.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/03\/20220310_100512985_iOS.jpg 625w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/03\/20220310_100512985_iOS-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/03\/20220310_100512985_iOS-293x220.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"625\" height=\"469\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/03\/20220310_100512985_iOS.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-64336\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/03\/20220310_100512985_iOS.jpg 625w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/03\/20220310_100512985_iOS-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2022\/03\/20220310_100512985_iOS-293x220.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 625px) 100vw, 625px\" \/><\/noscript><figcaption>Amanda Wood by her microgreens | Photo by Rowenna Hoskin<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Microgreen seeds can be grown in a very small space efficiently. The seeds grow within five to 10 days, from seedlings to harvest.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pop music filled the room, while LED lights, a dehumidifier and a fan provide a controlled clean environment to promote growth. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As we sat down to talk about her journey so far, Ms Wood\u2019s passion for growing nutritious food was evident. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She explained that although microgreens have typically been a very specialist gourmet food popularised by chefs, she wanted to change this. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m trying to make my greens less fancy and more functional. Well, Yes! Do you need some help? Yes! &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m new here, I don\u2019t know Wales. It took me a whole year.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The breakthrough for Ms Wood was when she started doing farmers\u2019 markets as it allowed her to create a loyal customer base. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aberystwyth University then offered Ms Wood a place to study Controlled Environment Agriculture for free. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat I learnt blew my mind. I didn&#8217;t realise that something that came so intuitively to me to grow microgreens as a solution, actually is the tip of the iceberg,&#8221; she said. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is small scale in comparison to huge vertical farms across the globe,\u201d she said, as she gestured to her shelves of seedlings. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEmpty warehouses can be filled with vertical farming. It should become the norm, there\u2019s just so much potential to urban farming like this.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After studying the course, Ms Wood said that her business was transformed. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI feel a real need now to make people aware of what we can all be doing. Buying local, buy organic, cutting down the supply chains.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Wood says that&nbsp;microgreens are&nbsp;a mechanism that brings people together and encourages discussion about the environment, nutrition and supply systems. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The whole process of growing them is brilliant for your mental health,&nbsp;&#8211; touching compost and breathing it in \u2013 the natural bacteria is really good for promoting serotonin as well as the nutritional benefits of growing microgreens.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Micro Greengrocer celebrated its first birthday last week and the public were able to plant their own seedlings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Each strand of the business has been focused on a community initiative: each customer who buys weekly gets to donate a pack of seeds to a community gardening group, each restaurant gets to donate a punnet of microgreens to a community food bank\/pantry\/fridge, and Ms Wood collects for Pedal Power at the farmers\u2019 markets.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now Ms Wood intends to expand these community foundations into other social organisations, one of which is the The Penarth Food Festival. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning on February 17 at Victoria Primary School, Year 3 and 5 pupils will be able to sow their own seeds.
