{"id":64730,"date":"2022-03-18T11:01:59","date_gmt":"2022-03-18T11:01:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=64730"},"modified":"2022-03-18T11:02:01","modified_gmt":"2022-03-18T11:02:01","slug":"drunk-lifeguard-smashed-alfa-romeo-into-tree-near-bridgend","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2022\/03\/18\/drunk-lifeguard-smashed-alfa-romeo-into-tree-near-bridgend\/","title":{"rendered":"Drunk lifeguard smashed Alfa Romeo into tree near Bridgend"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">He was over twice the legal limit for alcohol<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A LEISURE centre lifeguard drove his Alfa Romeo into a tree while over the drink-drive limit, a court has heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James McCormick, 30, of Bridgend, crashed into the tree and ended up in a ditch on the A4063 near Coytrahen, Bridgend, on February 26 this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McCormick, a lifeguard at Pencoed leisure centre, pleaded guilty at Cardiff Magistrates\u2019 Court on Tuesday. The case was referred to the probation service for pre-sentence reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA member of the public came across the defendant who had gone off the road and collided with a tree. The car ended up in a ditch,\u201d prosecutor Robert Reid told the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> He added that McCormick gave a sample of 92 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath, when the legal limit is 35.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McCormick had no previous convictions, the court was told.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Catherine Thompson, defending, said McCormick was suffering from the trauma of an assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cHe was out celebrating his 30th birthday when he was assaulted and left with a bleed to the brain,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSince that time, he has self-medicated with alcohol. He realises that this has to stop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>McCormick was fined \u00a3149, ordered to pay \u00a385 costs and a surcharge of \u00a395.
