split on new Roath Rec cycle path"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Unexpected council proposal given shortest consultation period allowed<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>THE announcement of a new cycle path to run alongside Roath Recreation Ground has produced mixed reactions from nearby residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is already a rough track, which is often muddy and boggy, running between Ninian Road and Roath Rec.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Council\u2019s plan is to widen and refurbish this path to allow a cycle route in the same space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The widening would lead to more grass being removed, making the refurbished path closer to the sports pitches, which are used often for rugby and football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter Burnett)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Anne-Maria Salmon, who has lived on Ninian Road for 30 years, said: \u201cThe cycle lane will lead to less space for football and children playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo put it on the same side of the park as the road means that these children will have to cross over it to play.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposal was announced on March 9, but no other mention of it can be seen it the council\u2019s previously published plans and maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an older council map, which highlights proposed paths for 2019-21, there is no Council)<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This route seems to be more popular with residents, who argue that its would suit that side of the Rec instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mrs Salmon added: \u201cI think the cycle lane would be better on the Ty-Draw Road side of the park, where children don\u2019t continually have to walk across a cycle track to get to the&nbsp; grass for playing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf the cycle track were put next to the pavement on Ty-Draw, then no part of the park would be lost, and the park would be safer for children to residents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeremy Sparkes, 62, who lives on Kimberley Road, said: \u201cI\u2019m amazed that the council has come up with a plan for a shared cycle and pedestrian route that isn\u2019t on any of the other plans they\u2019ve produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMost importantly, why are they putting pedestrians at risk when there are alternative options that are equally viable, and probably cheaper, that will keep pedestrians safer from not having to share with cycles?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" that they\u2019re taking cycling, safety and the environment seriously, and this can only be a good thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are always moans from certain quarters, but this is exactly the
