Wales<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>LAST weekend, I decided to take my English classmates on a hike to Pen y Fan, one of the highest peaks in the Brecon Beacons.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For tourists and locals alike, climbing Pen y Fan is a must while in South Wales.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As most of my classmates have only visited Cardiff, I wanted to continue the tradition and take them up the idyllic Welsh mountain.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On Saturday, March 12, we left a sunny Cardiff at 10.30am and drove an hour to the Brecon Beacons National Park.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The weather was a lot cooler than it had been in Cardiff and we instantly regretted not bringing warmer jackets, gloves, hats and scarfs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At 886m, Pen y Fan translates to &#8220;the top peak&#8221; and there are several routes that you can take to reach the summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"879\" loading=\"lazy\" href=\"https:\/\/www.visitwales.com\/things-do\/adventure-and-activities\/walking\/crowning-glory-4-ways-walk-pen-y-fan\"> route one<\/a>, which begins at Pont ar Daf car park and is a 6.4km round trip.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We started our hike at 12.30pm.\u00a0The average time to get to the top is two hours, but we decided to challenge ourselves to complete it in a quicker \u2013 and this is where the weather began to worsen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wind got stronger the higher we got, and we witnessed the <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2022\/03\/15\/coastguard-helicopter-rescues-injured-walker-from-pen-y-fan-despite-incredible-wind\/\">Mountain Rescue team airlifting a woman ourselves to a much-needed McDonald\u2019s on the way home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of the group enjoyed the experience and I hope to show them more scenic spots in Wales before they leave Cardiff
