Her no-holds-barred approach saw her picking apart exactly what she believes holds women with the potential to reach top jobs back and the specific things they must do to overcome them.<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sylvia-Ann-Hewlett-18.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6482\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sylvia-Ann-Hewlett-18-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sylvia Ann Hewlett \" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6482\" src=\"http:\/\/cardiffian.jomec.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Sylvia-Ann-Hewlett-18-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"Sylvia Ann Hewlett \" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" \/><\/noscript><\/a>The statistics thrown up about women in business were as shocking as they always are in such talks, highlighting the real depth of cost they pay for taking time off work to have children.<br \/>\n<strong>&#8216;Marzipan layer&#8217;<\/strong><br \/>\nWomen will apply for jobs only if they believe they fulfil 90% of the necessary criteria; men at 45%. Women make up 34% of the \u2018marzipan layer\u2019, stuck just below top leadership, but only 23% of parliament, 3% of CEOs in the FTSE 100 and 7.6% of top corporate earners in the US.<br \/>\nSpeaking of her own underprivileged upbringing in the Valleys (Wales, not California, though you\u2019d be forgiven the confusion going by the twang of Hewlett\u2019s American accent) she drew on a mix of personal experience from her career as an economist, businesswoman and writer and the stories of successful women such as Sheryl Sandberg to explore the importance of finding a sponsor to support you, asserting yourself in the workplace and mandating international companies to make it easier for women on maternity leave and encouraging more women on boards.<br \/>\n<b>&#8216;Showcasing successful women&#8217;<\/b><br \/>\nThe event\u2019s organiser <a href=\"http:\/\/www.senedd.assembly.wales\/mgUserInfo.aspx?UID=136\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dame Rosemary Butler<\/a>\u00a0AM introduced the talk as an \u201cextension of the spirit of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.internationalwomensday.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Women\u2019s Day<\/a>\u201d, which it certainly was. Dame Rosemary\u2019s \u201cWomen in Public Life\u201d series has attracted a seriously impressive line-up of women to Cardiff over the past few years, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/uk\/shami-chakrabarti\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shami Chakrabarti<\/a> to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dailymail.co.uk\/femail\/columnist-1032350\/Janet-Street-Porter-Daily-Mail.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Janet Street Porter<\/a>. In June the group plans to host former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard.<br \/>\nShe told us:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cPeople in Wales don\u2019t get to see the best speakers because we can\u2019t always attract them.
