{"id":66883,"date":"2022-11-08T16:37:40","date_gmt":"2022-11-08T16:37:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=66883"},"modified":"2022-11-08T16:37:42","modified_gmt":"2022-11-08T16:37:42","slug":"residents-pleased-nightmare-llandaff-north-junction-to-get-simple-zebra-crossing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2022\/11\/08\/residents-pleased-nightmare-llandaff-north-junction-to-get-simple-zebra-crossing\/","title":{"rendered":"Residents pleased &#8216;nightmare&#8217; Llandaff North junction to get &#8216;simple&#8217; zebra crossing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cardiff Council is trialling the crossings at two Llandaff North locations and one in Whitchurch<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>RESIDENTS say they are pleased at Cardiff Council\u2019s plans to trial &#8216;simple&#8217; zebra crossings in Llandaff North as locals claim \u201csomething definitely needs to be done\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two Llandaff North sites and one Whitchurch village location have been chosen for the trial. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The \u201cbusy\u201d junction of Station Road and Evansfield Road is one of the planned sites for the simple zebra crossings. Image credit: Lucy Evans<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The crossings &#8211; referred to as &#8216;simple&#8217; zebra crossings will have the black and white markings and the give way lines of a standard zebra crossing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, they will not have illuminated beacons,\u00a0tactile paving and zig-zag road markings.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A statement from Llandaff North Labour has said the Welsh Government-funded crossings are intended to act as \u201cindicative crossing points\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Llandaff North resident Emma Jones said she was pleased that a simple zebra crossing has been planned for the junction, which is close to four nearby schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it would be a good idea because it\u2019s a nightmare trying to get across here and a lot of people park in this area when they shouldn\u2019t so, yes, I think it will be good,\u201d said Ms Jones.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA lot of kids come down this way back and forth to school.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Whitchurch High School and Ysgol Gyfun Gymraeg Glantaf\u00a0are a short walk away, as are Hawthorn Primary School and the Cardiff Steiner School.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Resident Nicky Oliver agreed that measures were needed due to the volume of schoolchildren who use the route.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThey should have something here,&#8221; said Ms Oliver. &#8220;It is a busy area generally with the school kids and everything. Image Credit: Lucy Evans<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>George Deane, who works next to the junction at card and balloon shop Party Central said: \u201cI would say it\u2019s definitely needed because it\u2019s so dangerous around here. Whether or not it would be safer, I would have to see it in person.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Deane continued: \u201cBut something definitely does need to be done. The traffic around here and the parking is awful.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, some residents feel that the simple zebra crossings may not solve the problem without the features of a standard zebra crossing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t agree with it myself. I think there should be proper markings, proper pedestrian crossings,&#8221; said Paul Pulvirenti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Mr Pulvirenti continued: \u201cI suppose half measures is better than no measures at all.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Llandaff North resident Sam Hindle had concerns about the visibility of the proposed Station Road and Evansfield Road crossing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s lots of kids that cross there for the school and stuff so it\u2019s a good idea but whether anyone will take notice because it\u2019s right on the bend\u2026 and that makes life harder,\u201d Ms Hindle said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the simplified features of the crossing mean that&nbsp;it is possible to install the crossings directly across the junction on the desired walking line, according to Cardiff Council.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for Cardiff Council commented: \u201cThe simplified design requirements, in particular not including illuminated beacons, would also reduce the implementation and maintenance costs of providing new crossings.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Council has said that the installation of the crossings is expected to take a day in each location but effort will be made to ensure disruption is kept to a minimum.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cameras are currently in place to monitor how people use the sites before and after the crossings have been installed, a statement from Llandaff North Labour has said.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether the crossings remain at the sites depend on the outcome of the trial.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Residents are pleased at Cardiff Council\u2019s plans to trial two simple zebra crossings in Llandaff North as locals claim \u201csomething definitely does need to be done\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":903,"featured_media":66972,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"footnotes":""},"categories":[2,230,3],"tags":[52,231,1305,534,1098],"coauthors":[8090],"class_list":["post-66883","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-featured","category-llandaff-north","category-news","tag-cardiff-council","tag-llandaff-north","tag-parking","tag-traffic","tag-zebra-crossing"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v25.2 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Residents pleased &#039;nightmare&#039;
