{"id":67191,"date":"2022-11-09T22:24:54","date_gmt":"2022-11-09T22:24:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=67191"},"modified":"2022-11-09T22:24:58","modified_gmt":"2022-11-09T22:24:58","slug":"childrens-laureate-draws-on-his-life-story-to-inspire-others","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2022\/11\/09\/childrens-laureate-draws-on-his-life-story-to-inspire-others\/","title":{"rendered":"Children&#8217;s Laureate draws on his life story to inspire others"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connor Allen hopes his latest show, and his poetry workshops in schools, will encourage others to aim high in the arts \u00a0<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>PLAYWRIGHT <a href=\"https:\/\/www.connorallen.co.uk\/\">Connor Allen<\/a> never expected to become the Children\u2019s Laureate for Wales but now he uses the role to encourage children to believe in a better future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His story, he was raised in a struggling family on a Newport council estate, inspired his latest work, <em>The Making of a Monster<\/em>, which is being staged at the Wales Millennium Centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Connor did not have role models growing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI grew up with an absent Jamaican father on a council estate near Pillgwenlly,\u201d said the 30-year-old. &#8220;I didn\u2019t want that life, that day-by-day struggle to get food on the table.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His life hit a low point when, as a troubled youth, he was convicted in court of hitting his mother. It was a turning point, a shock to the system, and his mother is proud of what he has achieved since.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cOur past doesn\u2019t define us, it makes us the people that we are if we accept that,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After studying drama at the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in Carmarthen, he decided his true passion was writing plays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI chose through creativity to channel my energy into a constructive way rather than a destructive way. I\u2019m not the spokesperson for every mixed-raced person in Wales, but a key part of my identity is being mixed-race.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Connor incorporates his family background, childhood struggles and mixed-race identity in his play, <em>The Making of a Monster<\/em>, which has already been broadcast on BBC Sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs long as the work I make makes people feel and reflect then that\u2019s success for me.
