{"id":69307,"date":"2022-12-13T12:39:42","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T12:39:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=69307"},"modified":"2022-12-13T13:58:32","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T13:58:32","slug":"cardiff-volunteers-vandalised-bikes-fundraise-food-bank","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2022\/12\/13\/cardiff-volunteers-vandalised-bikes-fundraise-food-bank\/","title":{"rendered":"Sale of vandalised bikes pulled from rivers by volunteers raises \u00a32,000 for food banks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cardiff Rivers Group donated funds to help people who are struggling this winter<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>VOLUNTEERS from <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffriversgroup.org.uk\/\">Cardiff Rivers Group<\/a> have raised \u00a32,000 for local food banks by selling scrap metal it has pulled from rivers and other sites. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group has donated \u00a31,000 each to <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiff.foodbank.org.uk\/\">Cardiff Foodbank<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/fareshare.cymru\/\">Fareshare<\/a> to help feed families this Christmas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of the scrap metal came from 125 dumped OVO bikes which were found in a variety of locations around Cardiff. Some of the bikes had been thrown in rivers and others were \u201cmindlessly smashed up,\u201d said Nigel Barry, the secretary of the Cardiff Rivers group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe were invited to partner with OVO bikes to use some of the scrap bikes and parts for funding.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>OVO provides an electric bike hire service in Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, allowing people to travel around with zero carbon emissions. Image: Robin Drayton.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>Previously, Cardiff Rivers would collect broken parts from bikes which had already been dismantled from a storage facility, and add them to other metal collected from around the city. This would then be weighed in for scrap value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMore recently we went industrial and created a task force,\u201d said Mr Barry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These volunteers dismantle the scrap bikes and sort their parts by types of metal. Image: Cardiff Rivers group.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Emma Shepherd, a project manager at Cardiff Foodbank, said that Cardiff Rivers is \u201chelping the community by clearing the rivers, and turning the scrap metal into a donation for us to help feed people in crisis in the community too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe donation comes at a time when demand for emergency food parcels has never been so high, so will be a big help in the tough winter months\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group\u2019s efforts to tackle food poverty were inspired by the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on local people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was felt that the funds collected could be diverted to other worthy causes,\u201d said Mr Barry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have made donations to other groups before but not on the same scale. Other good causes we\u2019ve helped in the past include the <a href=\"https:\/\/thedustyshed.org.uk\/\">Dusty Shed<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aceplace.org\/\">ACE<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/nulifefurniture.co.uk\/\">Nulife<\/a>. Each organisation has benefited at some stage from our sale of scrap metal.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Barry said that anyone interested in <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2022\/12\/06\/crisp-packet-dating-back-to-1985-found-by-community-litter-pickers\/\">volunteering with Cardiff Rivers<\/a> \u201cshould <a href=\"https:\/\/cardiffriversgroup.us12.list-manage.com\/subscribe?u=ac8dc0b5b4bef46ba3c7b3cfc&amp;id=74e1a1d3c9\">sign up or subscribe to our event emails<\/a> and come along and join us\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Rivers can provide litter-picking equipment for those who do not have their own.
