so traders are having to adapt<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>ALONGSIDE Cardiff\u2019s high rise Central Square and modern shopping malls are small pockets of the past: the city\u2019s antique, vintage and collectible shops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These little units hold relics of a bygone era, but many antique and vintage dealers have seen the industry change and they are uncertain on where it is going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I visited Geoff Lewis\u2019 shop, Vintage Past &amp; They come out, some of them just wandering round \u2014 just looking and that&#8217;s it. People don&#8217;t want the old stuff so much.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-white-color has-text-color\"><em>Caroline Richards<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Richards describes herself as a dealer \u201cin all kinds of things\u201d due to the changed market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She tells me: \u201cI don&#8217;t really call myself an antique dealer because it&#8217;s very little antiques now. It&#8217;s more mid-century and collectibles, very little antiques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Things have moved on quite a lot you know. People don&#8217;t want the old stuff so much. They want more mid-century, more useful things.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cost-of-living crisis is furthering this shift, according to Ms Richards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe do useful stuff. We do glasses and cutlery, stuff like that, which is useful rather than a vase, which people could really do without,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Due to the cost-of-living crisis, 57% of people are cutting back on non-essentials, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/personalandhouseholdfinances\/expenditure\/articles\/whatactionsarepeopletakingbecauseoftherisingcostofliving\/2022-08-05\">ONS<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With even the richest 10% of households facing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforgovernment.org.uk\/explainer\/cost-living-crisis\">a 9.6% inflation rate<\/a>, people cannot afford to splash out on non-essential items anymore. Really rare pieces and really good quality antiques, people will always probably want those.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The demand for these upper-end, rare pieces is still stable and is not seeing the dramatic decline in price and interest like the rest of the market, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/news.artnet.com\/partner-content\/antiques-market-now\">Artnet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It said: \u201cThough the overall antiques sector has shrunken down, the very top of the market remains highly active. Unique and very high-end pieces have proved to hold their value.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite changes to the market, the unexpected nature of the job is as much of a draw as ever for Ms Richards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI love the buying more than the selling,\u201d she said through a laugh. \u201cI really love it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also thinks it is so important to maintain stores like this in Cardiff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p>&#8220;I think it&#8217;s nice. A lot of people don&#8217;t even know it\u2019s here,\u201d she said. &#8220;A lot of people come in and say, &#8216;oh it&#8217;s lovely, there&#8217;s so much to see&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardiff Antique Centre is another antique hub with plenty to see and it can be found in Royal Arcade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The centre is home to three sellers who all run their own businesses, including Janet Butler who has been working in antiques since the 1980s.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" Everybody can be an instant antique dealer so the years that you put in doing your own research and learning through buying and selling was no longer like that at all. People looked things up in the books.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There are many price guides available for traders and buyers to use to accurately price their antiques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They were introduced in 1972, revolutionising the market but pricing out seasoned traders as anyone could become an \u201cinstant expert\u201d, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/journalofantiques.com\/misc\/a-complete-history-of-the-antiques-trade-abridged\/\">Journal of Antiques and Collectibles.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You had to buy books and research yourself for things but it&#8217;s not like that now, it&#8217;s all gone to pot,&#8221; Ms Butler said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Butler has seen that the \u201ccustomer base has dwindled\u201d but believes there is still a market for antiques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said: \u201cThere is still a market because there are people out there that are looking for something exclusive that you can&#8217;t just go and buy in any shop.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Caroline Richards, Ms Butler believes that upmarket antiques will continue to sell well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the future will be in the dearer items so shops in London, say, that are selling diamond rings for 50 grand or oil paintings for half a million.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere will always be people with plenty of money that want exquisite things but for the middle tier, I don&#8217;t know that there will be that much of a market.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex
