{"id":71041,"date":"2023-01-17T15:20:29","date_gmt":"2023-01-17T15:20:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=71041"},"modified":"2023-01-18T09:56:49","modified_gmt":"2023-01-18T09:56:49","slug":"he-shouldnt-be-coming-out-of-jail-anger-as-lynette-whites-killer-granted-day-release","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2023\/01\/17\/he-shouldnt-be-coming-out-of-jail-anger-as-lynette-whites-killer-granted-day-release\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;He shouldn&#8217;t be coming out of jail&#8217;: Anger as Lynette White\u2019s killer granted day release"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The brother and sister of Tony Paris, one of the &#8216;Cardiff Three&#8217;, have spoken out after convicted murderer Jeffrey Gafoor tastes freedom<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>SIBLINGS of a man who was wrongly jailed for 17 years for the infamous murder of Lynette White have slammed the decision to grant day release to the actual killer, Jeffrey Gafoor.      <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gafoor, who stabbed 20-year-old Lynette nearly 70 times in her Butetown flat on Valentine\u2019s Day in 1988, has \u201csuccessfully undertaken temporary releases from prison,\u201d according to the Parole Board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The late Tony Paris was one of the &#8216;Cardiff Three&#8217; &#8211; three men who were wrongly convicted and jailed in November 1990 for White&#8217;s murder and subsequently aquitted in 1992. Paris was jailed alongside Yusef Abdullahi and Stephen Miller. Credit: Derry Salter<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p>The case is recognised as one of the gravest miscarriages of justice in the British history. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Advances in DNA technology led to the arrest in 2003 of Jeffrey Gafoor and he was sentenced to a minimum of 13 years. Credit: Cassie Parris<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the Court of Appeals quashed the convictions of the innocent men in 1992, the repercussions and sense of injustice have stayed with the community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy brother has passed away now but it is not just about him,&#8221; said Lloyd. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;It is about our family. We have unfortunately been affected by this for a long time. Every Valentine&#8217;s Day that passes, we remember Lynette again.&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the decision to give Gafoor day release, The Parole Board said: \u201cMr Gafoor\u2019s custodial conduct continued to cause no concerns.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Lloyd says the decision will have an effect on everyone affected by Gafoor&#8217;s crime.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t believe he should be coming out of jail or even be in an open jail,&#8221; he said.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My brother was given (sentenced to) 17 years. Yusef and Stephen were also given 17 years. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Why is he serving less than what they were sentenced? He should be serving all three of their sentences &#8211; 51 years.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.change.org\/p\/keep-killer-jeffrey-gafoor-locked-up\">petition<\/a> has been set up in the &#8216;Tiger Bay&#8217; community in an attempt to influence the Parole Board\u2019s decision and prevent Gafoor from leaving prison
