{"id":71580,"date":"2023-01-20T16:24:31","date_gmt":"2023-01-20T16:24:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=71580"},"modified":"2023-04-03T08:58:50","modified_gmt":"2023-04-03T07:58:50","slug":"we-have-lost-too-many-brothers-to-suicide-the-group-of-friends-breaking-the-stigma-of-mens-mental-health","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2023\/01\/20\/we-have-lost-too-many-brothers-to-suicide-the-group-of-friends-breaking-the-stigma-of-mens-mental-health\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018We have lost too many brothers to suicide\u2019: the group of friends breaking the stigma of men\u2019s mental health"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The group of friends have founded Brawd &#8211; a weekly mental health support group, open to men of all ages. <\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A group of Cardiff friends are launching Brawd, to \u201callow men the chance to break the stigma of men\u2019s mental health once and for all&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Co-founders Neil Driscoll, who works for the railway signalling programme, and Roberto Simone, a business analyst, decided to create this men&#8217;s mental health support group, after losing many male friends to suicide. Nathan Cox, James Thomas and Adam Virgin later joined the group to offer more support and ultimately created Brawd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt all started from a conversation between me and Roberto. However, the male suicide rate in 2021 was 19.7 per 100,000 people, compared with 5.9 for women. The Office for National Statistics confirmed that, in 2021, \u201caround three-quarters of suicides were males\u201d, something which is \u201cconsistent with long-term trends\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neil co-founded Brawd with Roberto Simone, as they felt there weren\u2019t many Cardiff specific support groups available, and if there were, they weren\u2019t easy to find.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe tried to put ourselves in a position where we felt like we had no options and&nbsp;think \u2018Where do we access this information?\u2019 and \u2018How do we get the support that we need?\u2019 and a simple search on Facebook didn\u2019t show anything up, on Google as well,\u201d said Neil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhen people are down on their luck, they aren\u2019t going to have the correct mindset. The keywords we searched didn\u2019t come up with anything useful. We want to change that, if possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe biggest bugbear for me, and possibly the biggest catalyst, is when people post on social media saying: \u2018if you\u2019re feeling alone, reach out and speak to me!\u2019\u201d Neil added. \u201cAnyone that has actually been in a low mood know that reaching out to someone isn\u2019t an easy thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a conversation that needs to be had, and this is my proactive way of trying to combat it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Initially founded in December, Brawd have already attracted a lot of attention and support on their social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">My mate is launching Brawd. But hopefully, once they come, they\u2019ll be able to show their friends that it\u2019s not so bad. It\u2019s all about breaking the mould,\u201d he added. \u201cIt\u2019s spreading really quickly &#8211; it\u2019s testament to how much this is needed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSo many people are enlightened by what we\u2019re doing. Obviously, as we\u2019re in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, we wanted to make it free of free of charge, and Bro Coffi has allowed us to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Along with weekly meetings, Brawd hopes to expand to offer fitness and social events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA local boxing club have offered us to have boxing sessions free of charge, obviously mental health and exercise go hand in hand.
