{"id":71636,"date":"2023-01-20T16:20:46","date_gmt":"2023-01-20T16:20:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=71636"},"modified":"2023-07-04T15:22:14","modified_gmt":"2023-07-04T14:22:14","slug":"plan-to-reduce-museum-of-cardiff-to-pop-up-site-incredibly-ill-considered-expert-warns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2023\/01\/20\/plan-to-reduce-museum-of-cardiff-to-pop-up-site-incredibly-ill-considered-expert-warns\/","title":{"rendered":"Plan to reduce Museum of Cardiff to pop-up site &#8216;incredibly ill-considered\u2019, expert warns"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Museum of Cardiff may become a pop-up experience rather than a fixed site<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>THE long-term effects of Cardiff Council\u2019s proposal to move the Museum of Cardiff out of the Old Library building in The Hayes have been criticised by a Professor of Conservation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The move is a response to the \u00a323.5m budget shortfall that Cardiff Council is facing for the financial year ahead &#8211; 2023\/24. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To help fill this funding gap, they are planning to shift the Museum of Cardiff away from its current permanent home in The Hayes and instead make it a pop-up attraction that travels around the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Council\u2019s argument is that this will save them \u00a3266,000 a year and, if they are able to find the money and a suitable venue, they could then re-open it permanently in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there are serious concerns about the feasibility of this plan. Jane Henderson, a Professor of Conservation at Cardiff University, is worried that the harm done to the museum\u2019s finances will force the Council to close it completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy main concern is that I cannot find an example of a pop-up museum working successfully,&#8221; said Prof Henderson.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;While big places like the National Museum can send exhibits out, they wouldn\u2019t work without the central venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt just seems like an incredibly ill-considered way to fill 1% of the (Council\u2019s budget) gap. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI also think it\u2019s disrespectful to funders. These conditions include being a \u201cpermanent entity with a long-term purpose\u201d and minimum levels of public access to exhibits. The Council\u2019s plans threaten the museum\u2019s ability to meet these benchmarks and, in turn, raise money from charitable grants \u2013 which often require accreditation status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Concerns about the museum\u2019s status were compounded earlier this month when the Deputy Minister for Arts and Sport, Dawn Bowden MS, told the Senedd: \u201cOfficials are liaising with Museum of Cardiff staff and have already given some feedback on the likely impact of the proposals on the museum\u2019s accredited status \u2026 I hope a solution is found where the Museum is able to maintain its accreditation status.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The current proposals appear to harm the museum\u2019s finances by reducing funding from the Council, while also making it significantly harder to qualify for funding from elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, even if this weren\u2019t the case, there are also concerns about the value lost to the city by taking the public\u2019s main gateway to Cardiff\u2019s history out of its current central location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Adam Johannes from Cardiff People\u2019s Assembly &#8211; a city-wide group who campaign against austerity, cuts and privatisation &#8211; said: \u201cMuseums are magical places where time is transformed into space. To deny citizens access to the story of Cardiff is like cutting the roots from a tree. Museums like the Museum of Cardiff are essential because they give us a story of our city that centres on the lives of everyday people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That sentiment was echoed by Prof Henderson: \u201cWithout museums, we\u2019d have nowhere to learn the lessons of our past. The exhibits tell ordinary stories about ordinary people. I cannot understand how we could be a capital city without a museum that tells our story.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gareth Brown, Chair of the Roath Local History Society, added: &#8220;I can&#8217;t see how it&#8217;s practical, people won&#8217;t know where it is. A museum should be at the heart of a city, and I really think that the Council is missing a trick by taking it out of a building that has had such historical significance.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Council\u2019s plans involve making the museum\u2019s collections a remote attraction, it\u2019s unclear what will happen to the rest of its features. It\u2019s available on <a
