Even if you can WFH, not everyone wants to. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Juls Hopkins, of Whitchurch, is one of these people. The facilities manager for a cleaning company has been working from home since 2020 but used to work in Pontcanna, a 15-minute drive away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now Ms Hopkins doesn&#8217;t have to drive to work, she is &#8220;saving a lot more money&#8221;. But this advantage does not outweigh the disadvantages for her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt can be very lonely working from home,&#8221; she said. &#8220;I loved working in an office and interacting with people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cNow it\u2019s just very lonely. I usually only go out and about on a Friday now. I certainly see fewer people. I would love a combination of office and homeworking.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/phw.nhs.wales\/news\/is-working-from-home-good-for-your-health\/how-does-working-from-home-affect-health-and-wellbeing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A recent report<\/a> by Public Health Wales said that 48% of homeworkers surveyed found that they were increasingly lonely. 45% found that their mental health had worsened while homeworking. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/datapiece.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72675\" width=\"458\" height=\"634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/datapiece.jpg 711w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/datapiece-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/datapiece-293x406.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/datapiece.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-72675\" width=\"458\" height=\"634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/datapiece.jpg 711w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/datapiece-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/01\/datapiece-293x406.jpg 293w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 458px) 100vw, 458px\" \/><\/noscript><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/census\/maps\/choropleth\/work\/method-of-travel-to-workplace\/transport-to-workplace-12a\/work-mainly-at-or-from-home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According to the 2021 census<\/a>, Cardiff has the highest percentage of people who work from home in comparison to other local authorities across Wales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The census revealed that 36.1% of people in Cardiff now work mainly from or at home, in comparison to only 2.3% of people in 2011.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Covid pandemic saw homeworking shift from less usual to commonplace. I prefer the peace and quiet of working from home. It means I can get on with things in my home office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy children are all grown up now, but my 21 pets certainly benefit from me working from home,\u201d said Ms Salter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whatdotheyknow.com\/request\/87329\/response\/213724\/attach\/2\/1.CM.199%20Homeworking%20Policy%20and%20Procedure.pdf?cookie_passthrough=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cardiff Council\u2019s policy<\/a> on homeworking says : \u201cHomeworking can have considerable advantages to employees, reducing the time and cost of travelling and providing a quieter and more controllable work environment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Ms Salter, the benefits of homeworking are clear: \u201cI feel more relaxed, more productive and my mental health has improved. I wouldn\u2019t go back to office working.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sarah Hyde, who works for the NHS, has continued to work in person and has seen the benefits: \u201cI cycle most of the time from Whitchurch to the Bay.&nbsp; It takes me about 30 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy journey to work is free and it really helps my health and wellbeing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, Ms Hyde would like to change her working pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI would like to work from home sometimes. I find clothing at work an issue as I have to dress professionally. At home, I could wear what I want,\u201d said Ms Hyde.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research Professor Alan Felstead, author of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/Remote-Working-A-Research-Overview\/Felstead\/p\/book\/9781032160986?utm_source=individuals&amp;utm_medium=shared_link&amp;utm_campaign=B019759_kr1_1au_7pp_d741\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Remote Working: A Research Overview<\/a><\/em>, thinks that homeworking is here to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think the genie is out of the bottle and I can see no way of completely going back to our old ways of working,&#8221; said Prof. Felstead, the Co-Director for Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research and Data,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMore likely it will be a situation where people work on a hybrid basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe trend of hybrid working has been encouraged in Wales with the Welsh Government aiming to have 30% of workers working at or near home by 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/employmentandlabourmarket\/peopleinwork\/employmentandemployeetypes\/articles\/businessandindividualattitudestowardsthefutureofhomeworkinguk\/apriltomay2021#perceptions-of-homeworking\">According to ONS<\/a>, four-fifths of businesses said that improving staff wellbeing was the reason behind wanting to increase homeworking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But not all businesses want to increase homeworking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou ask most bosses, everybody secretly wants everyone to come back to the office,&#8221; Tony Danker, Director General of the Confederation of British Industry,  told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2023\/jan\/27\/most-bosses-secretly-want-all-staff-back-in-offices-says-head-of-cbi\">The Guardian<\/a><\/em>, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I just don\u2019t think that is going to happen overnight. I think the whole world of work has gone crazy.
