{"id":74617,"date":"2023-02-21T15:12:06","date_gmt":"2023-02-21T15:12:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=74617"},"modified":"2023-05-29T22:44:40","modified_gmt":"2023-05-29T21:44:40","slug":"firefighter-who-lost-older-brother-in-house-fire-to-climb-everest-in-his-memory","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2023\/02\/21\/firefighter-who-lost-older-brother-in-house-fire-to-climb-everest-in-his-memory\/","title":{"rendered":"Firefighter who lost older brother in house-fire to climb Everest in his memory\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Carl Marsh joined the service to &#8220;do his brother proud&#8221; after his&nbsp;tragic death aged 34&nbsp;<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>WHEN you ask Carl Marsh why he is embarking on a 71-mile trek up Mount Everest you might get a simple response.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt was on my bucket list and after some close losses I just decided that life is too short,\u201d said Carl, a firefighter from Penarth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But talk a little longer and you&#8217;ll find his reasons are varied but all deeply personal.  &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four years ago Carl lost his older brother Craig in a house&nbsp;fire.&nbsp;Craig was&nbsp;34. The first of three organisations Carl will be donating to is <a href=\"https:\/\/velindre.nhs.wales\/velindrecc\/\">Velindre Cancer Centre<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2019 Carl lost his aunt to cancer. He said his Aunty Pat should have been off enjoying retirement when she passed.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More recently he has been supporting his 64-year-old stepmother, Jan, in her recovery from breast cancer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carl said: \u201cThe charity is massively important in the support they show for families that have been affected by cancer and I have friends now that are being supported by them and they just do so much to help and support you.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;\u201cI think moving forward I am going to continue to raise money for them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">For his dad<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The second charity on Carl\u2019s donation list is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stroke.org.uk\/\">The Stroke Association<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2020 Carl\u2019s father, Paul, suffered a stroke.&nbsp;At this time hospitals were under strict Covid-19 rules and many of the services usually available were very restricted.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Carl said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stroke.org.uk\/\">The Stroke Association<\/a> was a massive support system for both him and his father during this hard time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/9\/2023\/02\/carl-and-paul-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Carl Marsh (right) and Paul Marsh (left) at the beach. Image: Carl Marsh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Carl said: \u201cWhen I had no further support avenues to go to, I was directed to this charity and this lady called Tracey was just a fountain of knowledge for the services available for my dad once he left the hospital.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWithout their help and support my dad wouldn\u2019t have got a lot of the rehab and aftercare that he did have.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Paul is now 69 years old and despite ongoing memory problems \u201che is, in the grand scheme of things, doing well\u201d.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Madeline Donnelly, relationship fundraiser at the Stroke Association, said: \u201cEvery five minutes, stroke destroys lives and it can strike anyone \u2013 young, old and anyone in between. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The Stroke Association is here to fund research and support people to rebuild their lives after stroke, but this is only possible with the efforts of our amazing supporters such as Carl and we\u2019re hugely grateful to him. Image: Carl Marsh<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The third cause Carl is donating to is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firefighterscharity.org.uk\/\">The Fire Fighters Charity<\/a>.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBeing a firefighter myself I have seen first-hand how important the work we do is,\u201d said Carl.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jeffrey Scrivens, Community Fundraiser at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firefighterscharity.org.uk\/\">The Fire Fighters Charity<\/a>, said: \u201cOn behalf of everyone at The Fire Fighters Charity, I wish Carl the best of luck with his upcoming challenge. Climbing Everest Base Camp is no small feat, and we hugely appreciate his support.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThanks to challenges like this &#8211; and donations from kind-hearted supporters &#8211; we can continue to offer our life-changing support to thousands of fire service personnel and their families every year. Image: <a href=\"https:\/\/unsplash.com\/@sebaspenalambarri\">Sebastian Pena Lambarri<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Carl will have a physically exhausting battle against below freezing temperatures, low oxygen levels and potential altitude sickness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The journey will take a total of 16-days. Two of these days will be used for acclimatisation.
