{"id":75172,"date":"2023-02-26T16:25:10","date_gmt":"2023-02-26T16:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/?p=75172"},"modified":"2023-03-15T13:11:15","modified_gmt":"2023-03-15T13:11:15","slug":"roald-dahls-hometown-reacts-to-u-turn-on-censorship-decision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cardiffjournalism.co.uk\/thecardiffian\/2023\/02\/26\/roald-dahls-hometown-reacts-to-u-turn-on-censorship-decision\/","title":{"rendered":"Roald Dahl&#8217;s hometown reacts to U-turn on censorship decision"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Residents of Llandaff fear this is only one case in a wider censorship epidemic<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>AFTER facing heavy backlash, Penguin, the publisher of Roald Dahl&#8217;s classic books, has announced it will no longer be removing words such as &#8220;fat&#8221; and &#8220;ugly&#8221; from his work. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Llandaff residents, the U-turn marks a huge win in preserving the area&#8217;s rich literary heritage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roald Dahl was born in Llandaff and spent most of his childhood there, something he wrote about extensively in his autobiography <em>Boy<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial decision to censor Dahl\u2019s&nbsp;books was described by Llandaff residents of all ages as \u201cnonsense\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Roald Dahl&#039;s hometown reacts to censorship news\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9EiBzSGOoNo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Roald Dahl&#039;s hometown reacts to censorship news\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9EiBzSGOoNo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI imagine Roald Dahl is turning over in his grave at the thought of this conversation,\u201d said John Kenyon, an elderly volunteer at Llandaff Cathedral, which overlooks the old site of Dahl\u2019s school.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr Kenyon&#8217;s daughter teaches at Howell\u2019s School, the site of Roald Dahl&#8217;s childhood home, so he feels the legacy of Dahl every day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI&#8217;m glad to hear they&#8217;ve changed their minds. A lot of people of my generation and slightly younger will think changing words changes the whole tone of his books. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We need to stop this, otherwise we\u2019re going to start sanitising everything left, right and centre and we will just end up with a terrible blandness,\u201d he said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This view is one shared by many residents in Llandaff, whatever their age.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI definitely don\u2019t support this in any way,\u201d said Aimee Wood, from Scruffy Dogs, when she first heard that Penguin was rewriting the books.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The dog groomer is the mother of a nine-year-old girl who is an avid Dahl reader.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy daughter has the full collection and she loves it. She\u2019s been reading it since she was about seven and she had probably read <em>The Twits<\/em> about five times. She thinks they\u2019re hysterical.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA little bit of humour goes a long way and I don\u2019t think any of this is really something that is that damaging to anybody. Children don\u2019t need to be pandered to.\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">As a Councillor for <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Llandaff?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Llandaff<\/a> where <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RoaldDahl?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#RoaldDahl<\/a> was born and wrote his stories. <br><br>I feel sure there will be a lot of people that feel disappointed with the decision to re-write his books. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BBCWales?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@BBCWales<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/thehuwedwards?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@thehuwedwards<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/harryph?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@harryph<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WaNczGPbty\">https:\/\/t.co\/WaNczGPbty<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/iSkKrRxOTA\">https:\/\/t.co\/iSkKrRxOTA<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/bAGrvPuFyZ\">pic.twitter.com\/bAGrvPuFyZ<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Sean Driscoll (@Sean4Llandaff) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Sean4Llandaff\/status\/1627799565121335296?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 20, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the positive reaction to Penguin&#8217;s U-turn decision, for residents of Llandaff, the debate marks another example of a larger issue of censorship in Wales. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many residents referenced the recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-wales-64488231\">decision<\/a> by the Welsh Rugby Union\u00a0to remove the anthem <em>Delilah<\/em> from official choir setlists due to its inappropriate lyrics.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not just Roald Dahl, people are trying to do it with all sorts of things,\u201d said Dr Kenyon.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sally Thomas, a mother of two from Llandaff, had similar opinions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI just think everybody\u2019s going too far with everything that we\u2019re editing, and people should read it without looking into it too much,\u201d she said.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think people are just trying to find something like the Delilah song and this is the next thing that they\u2019ve found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut if they change his words then they\u2019re not his books any more are they?\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ms Thomas, who was previously a teacher in Pentwyn, told <em>The Cardiffian<\/em> that she has fond memories of the school getting together to celebrate Roald Dahl\u2019s 100<sup>th<\/sup> birthday in 2016.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI think it was fabulous, the kids enjoy all those crude words and they don\u2019t find it offensive at all. However, to take out descriptive words that make the books so popular is, in my view, just daft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Roald Dahl books and films have entertained children in Llandaff and across the world, and people in Llandaff are very proud of their association with Roald Dahl,\u201d Coun Driscoll added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI personally have happy memories of sitting at home with my daughter watching <em>Matilda<\/em>, not 300 yards from where Roald Dahl was born.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<p><iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1oSPPMOXZLsjW7zpDgz_XWBdghsYFn3U&amp;ehbc=2E312F\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/embed?mid=1oSPPMOXZLsjW7zpDgz_XWBdghsYFn3U&amp;ehbc=2E312F\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\"><\/iframe><\/noscript><\/p>\n\n\n<p>Roald Dahl was born on Fairwater Road, Llandaff in 1916. His autobiography <em>Boy<\/em> marks out key places of his childhood, including St John\u2019s churchyard in Danescourt where Dahl, aged four, buried his father and Howell\u2019s School, the site of Dahl\u2019s childhood house.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dahl attended Llandaff Cathedral School, which overlooked Cathedral Green but is now located on Cardiff Road.&nbsp;He has also written extensively about a sweetshop which was located on the High Street.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many speculate that the owner of the sweetshop inspired the character of Mrs Pratchett in <em>The Great Mouse Plot<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roald Dahl died of cancer on 23 November, 1990.
