He wants to spread awareness of the symptoms of sepsis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI lost my brother to sepsis in 2012 very suddenly and we&#8217;d never heard of sepsis at that time so we raise awareness, throughout the year, of the condition and events like today really make the sepsis and Sepsis Trust visible,\u201d the 50-year-old said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWhat we&#8217;re trying to do is shine a light on that and let people know what the symptoms of sepsis are so they can react quickly, seek health care quickly and hopefully be treated quickly and have a good outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" title=\"Terence Canning on raising awareness of sepsis\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_1D_G__TgYk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><noscript><iframe title=\"Terence Canning on raising awareness of sepsis\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_1D_G__TgYk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The family have been fundraising for the <a href=\"https:\/\/sepsistrust.org\/\">UK Sepsis Trust<\/a> for 10 years and holding a five-a-side football tournament for the past few years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s Mark Canning Cup took place on March 5 in Whitchurch and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justgiving.com\/page\/mark-canning-2023?utm_source=copyLink&amp;utm_medium=one_page&amp;utm_content=page\/mark-canning-2023&amp;utm_campaign=pfp-share&amp;utm_term=82fedb41284348fb9d6bafd7fdb73f1f\">raised over \u00a31,000<\/a> for the charity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cup started with a one-minute round of applause in memory of Mark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terence&#8217;s wife, Siobhan Corria, never met Mark but has been supporting her husband in raising awareness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">We\u2019ve kicked off our fundraising for 2023 in memory of Mark in aid of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UKSepsisTrust?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@UKSepsisTrust<\/a> <br><br>In 2022 we raised \u00a35000 can we go higher? \ud83e\udd1e\ud83c\udffc<br><br>As always, you support is appreciated \ud83d\ude4f\ud83c\udffd<a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TFeMu0NFzW\">https:\/\/t.co\/TFeMu0NFzW<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TCTRON?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@TCTRON<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Siobhan Corria \ud83c\udff3\ufe0f\u200d\ud83c\udf08 #Blacklivesmatter (@SiobhanCorria) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SiobhanCorria\/status\/1631389316814348318?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">March 2, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI hadn&#8217;t met Mark because I wasn&#8217;t with my husband at the time but obviously I want to support my husband to keep his brother&#8217;s memory alive as much as possible,\u201d the 44-year-old said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;ve been raising awareness of sepsis through social media mostly and raising money through fundraising events every year.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The family chose a football tournament as Mark was an avid football fan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terence said: \u201cMy brother was a big football fan, a big Liverpool fan, so there&#8217;s a little bit of him in this day as well but generally it&#8217;s a good way to bring people together. People like to get outside and football does unite people.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tournament had seven teams and 35 people taking part, with players paying to join in. Credit: Lucy Evans<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He said: \u201cI think it&#8217;s vital that things like this happen so we can raise money for the Sepsis Trust and they can get out in the communities and raise awareness more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt&#8217;s great to support Siobhan and Terence because they do so much great work for the Sepsis Trust. It happens when your immune system overreacts to an infection and starts to damage your body&#8217;s own tissues and organs.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The NHS website lists the symptoms of sepsis and can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/sepsis\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2021, more than 2,900 people had sepsis registered as their underlying cause of death in England and Wales, according to the Office for National Statistics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/x3fBC\/3\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/x3fBC\/3\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"800\" height=\"600\"><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the highest number of deaths with sepsis as the underlying cause in the 20-year period between 2001 and 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When looking at the number of death registrations where sepsis was mentioned anywhere on the death certificate, there has been a general decline since peaking in 2006 with more than 27,000 deaths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, in 2021 almost 22,000 death registrations in England and Wales mentioned sepsis in some capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe class=\"zeen-lazy-load-base zeen-lazy-load\" src=\"about:blank\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/sdMFU\/1\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\"><\/iframe><noscript><iframe src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/sdMFU\/1\/\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" width=\"800\" height=\"500\"><\/iframe><\/noscript>\n\n\n\n<p>A spokesperson for the UK Sepsis Trust said: \u201cThe most important thing people can do is \u2018just ask \u2013 could it be sepsis?\u2019, whether they are concerned about themselves, a loved one or someone they care for.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf someone is exhibiting any of the signs of sepsis, then they should call 999 or visit A&amp;E.
